This is a great tongue-in-cheek article written by our very own Atoz. I hope everyone has a chance to read this and we get a good discussion going about it. I'll be back later to post some of my thoughts.

It was entertaining to read, but frankly a bit immature. The concepts in some of the movies that the reviewer bashed deserved much more than a "whatever." This kind of review usually stems from someone who doesn't take the time to really understand the Human condition found so eloquently throughout, for example, "The Undiscovered Country."
What I felt throughout the reading was that this was simply an attempt to downplay the films and promote the television shows, when in actuality, most of the films have "survived" the test of time because of their strength, and the reviewer has managed to apparently sum them up in a paragraph each and even diminish them to faint memories.
Of course movies have plot faults and mistakes, but something that also binds us together as fans is not to bash the series, but to embrace the positive aspects that have helped shape "Star Trek" for so many decades.

I don't want to speak for Atoz, but if I had to guess, some parts of the article aren't meant to be taken too seriously...hence the tongue-in-cheek method I mentioned. I think downplaying the movies is somewhat for comedic effect. What we should be focusing on is basically this...what do you believe Star Trek is really about?

I stand by my statement that while some of the movies are entertaining, they don't come close to the best episodes of the series itself. That was the entire point.

I guess I'll have to roll with that then.
I definitely agree to an extent. If you don't think the movies were catered to a larger audience, you're probably being naive. But I'm also a sucker for action and good space battles, which is why I like most of the movies quite a bit (yes, even Nemesis). I think if you look hard enough, they still capture the essence of Star Trek, it's just overshadowed by all the action.

I agree, some of the movies are amusing like the one with the whales, I can't recall the number. The first one was painful though,.. I haven't seen the TNG ones yet but am looking forward to them!

I thought it was a well-written article, Atoz 77. And because movies target a wider audience, hence the stylized version filled with eye-candy, at the expense (in certain instances) of a more 'diluted', less 'cerebral' essence of Trek usually observed on the small screen version.

I think it's fair to say that Star Trek will never be like it used to be. If a new series were to come out in a couple years, I have a feeling it will be more like the movies than the TV shows. They'll want to broaden the audience in efforts to make more money and have a more successful show. It worked for the movie, so I think they would take a similar approach for a series.

I wouldn't mind if they made the show more popular, but I think JJ tried to stay with the basic dynamics of the characters with his own twist. I just hope the show would be fun if it came out, but I still can't see Chris Pine as Kirk. That's just me.

I don't think they'd use the same characters for a new TV show. I'm pretty sure they'd go in a different direction with the cast, but it would keep a similar style to the new movie. Atoz, if there is a new series, you may end up lumping it in with all the movies.

Exactly what I'm saying. In "Insurrection", Picard rather sardonically says, "Does anyone remember when we used to be explorers?" That's the point. The series was about exploration, meeting new cultures, new strange phenomena. It was truely science fiction. You get the feeling that the movies don't even try to be scientifically accurate.
In "Nemesis", they claim that positrons are only associated with "Soong-type androids." My astronomy textbook says positrons are created by nuclear fusion, so they are poured out by every star in the galaxy. The catch is that they would annihiliate before they made it to the surface, let alone into space. The same would go for any positrons that managed to leak out of an android brain. The first atom in the planet's atmosphere they hit and... whoom! If Data's brain is leaking enough positrons to be detected a solar system away, he must be an awful radiation hazard!
And if a new series comes out aping the new movies, I just won't watch it, that's all.

Here's an idea for a new series: the show could follow the 'younger' generation of Trek, namely Naomi, Icheb, Alexander, Miral as they go through Starfleet Academy, and future adventures post-Academy. Cast members from the former series could make guest appearances. Just a thought.
