Do you believe that the Mind (that essence which makes you a unique individual) is completely separate from the Brain, and can therefore exist outside the body, even after death? Or do you believe that all that makes up the Mind is contained inside the physical properties of the Brain?

I believe that the mind can be separate from the brain. I believe that this is a person's soul, part of what lives on after a person dies.

If that's the case, does Data have an immortal soul? If so, where did it come from? (I realize that in a way this is an unfair question, so don't think I'm using this as an "argument" against your point of view. I'm just curious what you think.)
I'm a materialist. I think that everything about our personality that we attribute to a "soul" is part of the physical structure of our brains.

Atoz, I have often wondered if Data had a soul. He was considered sentient. I really can't answer that question without further thought. I understand and respect what you believe Atoz. The statement "when your dead your dead" and you cease to exist is something I just don't believe in. I believe that part of a person lives on in another way after death. It makes more sense to me and would take a long time to explain fully why I think this is so.

Well Data really doesn't have a human brain so therefore it doesn't work the same with him. His mind isn't living matter. But us humans, well, I believe that the mind and the brain are separate entities working together to make what we are who we are.

Very well put Jadis. I also believe that we humans also have a spirit that resides where our hearts are that is also connected in some way and is another part of us besides our bodies.

What about memories, then? It's been well established since about the 50s that memories are stored in specific locations in your brain. A neurosurgeon can plant a probe in your brain and you will begin to relive that memory. So does your soul also store memories?

Atoz. I believe that both the brain and soul store memories. I have read about how memories are stored int the brain. It is interesting that something unrelated can come up and trigger some one to remember something that they have not thought of in a long time. A song or a smell of something can be linked tho the memory brought up.

I Agree The Brain Is Very Intricate And Complex!

leopardessgirl yes the brain is very complex and we are all wired differently, but similar in most cases. I have seen pics of brain scans or MRI's when people were thinking about different things. The active parts showed up more brightly. They use false color imaging

Remember "The Measure of a Man"?, where Commander Maddox tried to get his hooks into Data, hoping to backward engineer him? I think this is a fascinating subject, that Data has all the characteristics of Consciousness or Self-awareness, but he's a machine.

That Is True, As It Makes You Wonder Then, How Did Data Become Self Aware, Unless That Was In His Programing?

It's interesting to watch as his personality and self-awareness developed over the course of the series. At first, he hardly ever volunteered opinions about things, but he was always asking questions about humanoid culture.

Yes I saw That, So His Intellect And Self Awareness Was Then Growing. But Then How Did He Gain affects Like Those Of Us Who Have a "Will" , That I Find Interesting As He was Put On Trial By Star Fleet, As They Wanted To Deactivate Him, But He went to Court To Prove He Had A Will Of His Own And Prove That He Was Able To Think For Him Self. That Was Very Interesting to Watch, If All Of You Remember The Episode.

Yeah I believe your brain stores the memory but it's nothing without the soul. The soul is what makes a person who they are. For example, without the soul those triggered memories in your brain would be like a DVD in a DVD player - no connection or personality, just a replay of something that happened. You need the soul to make the person who they are.
