At any rate, it's pretty obvious to any cat lover that Data had at least three or four different cats, and because he didn't have a lot of real creativity or emotional context, he just called all of them "Spot". So once again, a "mistake" turns out not to be one after all.

Calling a cat Spot (especially one without spots) seems pretty creative to me (as it's usually a cliche name reserved for Dalmatians). It may have been a mistake within the context of behind-the-scenes information, but that's certainly as valid an explanation as any. I just figure since Spot didn't make very many appearances in the show (that I can remember, anyway), they just didn't always have the same cat on hand so they had to use a different one.

Actually, the very inappropriateness of the name indicates to me that Data didn't spend a lot of time thinking about it. He probably reasoned that, since pets aren't sentient anyway, any random name would do just as well as another. In contrast, he probably spent a whole millisecond pondering a name for his daughter, Lal.

Well, of course we'll never know for sure because they never aired the process Data went through to come up with the name for Spot. But Data obviously felt some sort of affection for Spot (at least whatever passes for android affection). Take the stanza of Ode to Spot: "And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not understand/I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend." Whether Data knew beforehand that he would become such good friends with Spot is up in the air.

I think this is just poetic license. We never see Data talking to Spot with anything resembling affection, the way real pet lovers do.

But if you'd like to peruse it, Atoz started a brand new topic specifically about Spot.

how did this conversatin turn from currency to data and spot?... The mark of a good discussion is how it can wander off topic every now and then.

The time of The Enterprise D is set in the 2360's and spans a decade considering Voyager and DS9.
If some one is thinking about putting today's politicians on a future currency......say from the later 21st century to the 24th, I'm going to puke!!! ;D

Well, Romulus was destroyed in the prime timeline, before Nero and Spock went into the past and it was changed.
