You ever wonder what would happen if you were enjoying your favorite holodeck fantasy and suddenly there was a Red Alert?

The computer would probably save the program and open the holodeck. But I agree it would come as quite a shock to the person inside it.

Yes I was thinking of Clues where Picard is playing his Dixon Hill game and Data called him on the phone because he said it would less intrusive. And I thinking that's not intrusive. Having a red alert come when you'r in the middle of making love to Angelina Jolie. THATS intrusive!

I don't want to stray off topic, but what you said about Angelina started the wheels turning. How do you suppose they get the holographic forcefields to be so... soft and responsive?

Technically a hologram would just be an image without substance liek AL in Quantum Leap. To give it the illusion of being solid theyd have to put a forcefield in it too. I dont see how a forcefield could have that much texture you know. Technically it would be frictionless. So I expect they mainly concentrate on sight and sound and let your imagination do the rest.

It makes me wonder what Geordi Laforge sees on the holodeck. His visor would certainly not be fooled by the holograms. He'd see the images, but he'd also see the forcefields and the real walls of the holodeck, wouldn't he?

I would thinkso too but in Elementary My Dear Data the character Moriarty managed to hide Dr. Pulaski from them. Do you suppose the forece fields create too much interference for the VIZOR?

And what about food? In the movie "First Contact" Picard steps into a holodeck recreation of a restaurent from a Dixon Hill novel. What do you think? Could you eat the food in a holodeck restaurent?

This is a good question. I think the question is related to the submachinegun Picard also picked up in that restaurent. I think the holodeck actually replicates certain objects or props rather than merely simulating them. That's the only way to explain a loaded gun with bullets that can actually cause damage. So the same would apply to food. If you intend to eat the food, it ties into the food replicators and gives you food you can eat.

that makes a lot of sense. I remember in Elementary Dear Data, Moriarty made a drawing of the Enterprise and gave it to Data and Geordi, and they took it out of the holodeck to show to Picard. THat piece of paper must have been a replicated prop or it would have disappeared as soon as it left the holodeck.

Obviously. And yet I have seen that piece of paper cited as a "mistake" by people anxious to find fault with Star Trek. It goes hand in hand with Wesley getting wet after falling in the water on the holodeck, in the very first episode, "Encounter at Farpoint".

That's true. Same explanation. The holodeck must have replicated real water and mud for that scene.

I'm pretty sure I brought this up before, but what about animals in the holodeck?
