Hi everybody.
I've got a plot for my own Star Trek fan fic, but I've stumbled across a problem... Uniforms and Promotion.
One of my Captains, (as a Commander) would've worn blue.
Now, I was wondering, when a 'blue uniform' commander gets promoted to Captain, would they change to a red uniform... or would they still be in blue?
Thanks

Yes, provided he was in command of a ship. Red signifies Command. Your character would have been a Science officer, presumably administrating the entire Science department of a starship. If would be possible to be promoted to Captain rank and still remain a Science officer, (perhaps administrator of a Special Projects section of a Starbase for example), and he would still wear a blue uniform. But if he was given command of a starship, he would first be sent to Command School, and from then on he would wear the red uniform. Does that help?

That does help. (And it has also helped me out with my plot.) Thank you.

That's true. The reason I had such a ready answer for this question was because I thought about it a lot when I was creating my own character.
The navy has always made a distinction between what they call "Line officers" and "staff officers", which include Engineers, Medical personnel, Science officers, Security, and so on. When you think about it, after you reach the rank of Lieutenant, for further promotion you would have to show a certain amount of leadership/command potential (or really great administrative ability). That's why for staff officers promotions after Lieutenant would be few and far between just because there wouldn't be as many opportunities in those jobs to show leadership/command ability.
So I figure if you're a Science officer and you want to command a starship someday, you have to start about the time you make full Lieutenant cross training in another area like Operations, so you'll be qualified in both areas. When you think about it, that's what Spock was doing in TOS, so he was able to serve as both Science Officer AND First Officer.

And speaking of fan fiction, didn't you tell me you were working on a story, Luke? How is it coming along?

I've been working on that story for about six months. You make it look so easy Admiral! SEriously I might be ready to start posting it next week. I just can't think of a title for it.

I've got a plot for my own Star Trek fan fic, but I've stumbled across a problem... Hang in there and keep working. I'd love to read your story when you're done.

Thanks I'm a bit nervous about writing it. I've watched so much Star Trek, but i always feel like i'm going to mess it up, and have lots of fans flame me saying, "That's not possible" or "You can't do that". Thats why i thought i should ask about rank.

We're probably not going to rake you over the coals too bad. I just finished up the story I've been working on, and I'm nervous about posting it too. I figue why not?

That's true (what Luke said) although we haven't really found out because nobody posts stories here but me. Where do you post your other stories, Devil? Do you have your own forum?

*laughs embarrasingly* Yeah I do. Its a bit quiet (with only 22 members.) But I'm not known as Devils@Dusk on there... (and I'm the most active member...) darkslayerscave.foruminute.com If you look, i'll give you a warning... Its a bit of a minefield... and ... well, its not cuddly like most forums... (we have a mature section). SO...You might want to take A phaser rifle. I've also got a deviant art account where i post stories too

Like I found a Fan Fiction section and clicked the icon but nothing happened.

I found the Fan Fiction section, but I didn't see any Star Trek stories. It mostly seems about games.
