What if the warp signature from Zefram Cochrane's first warp flight was picked up by a Romulan ship instead of a Vulcan one?
Would this result in the Romulan conquest of Earth and making humans a slave race? Would the Romulans simply destroy the Phoenix before leaving the Sol System? Would external circumstances, like, competition against the Klingons or the Andorians, lead the Romulans to form an alliance with Earth?
How would First Contact between Earth and the Romulan Star Empire change Trek history?

from all of what we know the romulans they seem to be those that will only conquer when its good for them. Now in this case, it seems more likely that they probably would conquer earth. Romulans dont like outsiders whatsoever, but they are like the klingons, they are willing to get whats theirs at any cost. remember the episode in TNG where they stole bajoran ships and they had about 2000 soldiers heading to bajor to conquer them? perfect example

They would conquer, and put everyone to work in the dilithium mines...

I think they would have paid earth a visit and sent us back to the dark ages, then went back home.

You're assuming that Romulans are "inherently evil" or something. As far as I know, we were never told what caused the first war between Earth and Romulus. It may have been because of a diplomatic blunder, who knows? Maybe in an alternate time-line, we were friends!

I think the odds are in favor of the Romulans conquering earth. If there were some other factors involved like a threat from a common enemy, say the Klingon's for example, an alliance could be formed, but the Romulans would be dominate. I don't believe the Romulans are inherently evil as seen a number of times throughout star trek, but have often acted that way. They are an offshoot of the Vulcan race who chose not to follow the teachings of Surak or left Vulcan before this happened.

Another point is that according to "Balance of Terror", the Romulans were behind Earth in basic technology. That's why the cloaked warbird came as such a shock. So Artemus is really proposing two twists in the timeline we know -- that Romulans discovered Earth first, and that Romulans were more technologicall advanced than us.

Interesting Indeed! I Had No Idea The Romulans Were Behind Earth In Technology. Appearantly The Romulans Wanted To Appear Like They Were Equal Or Better Than Earth. Fascinating Indeed!

My understanding is that the Romulans were way behind the Federation in warp technology. In the Episode Atoz mentioned "Balance of terror" Scotty said their power was simple impulse, meaning they did not have warp drive at the time until later they had a brief alliance with the Klingon's and exchanged their cloaking tech. for warp drive tech. Their powerful plasma torpedo's out gunned the Enterprises phasers and photon torpedo's.

In my last post referring to the 23rd century. The technology was more and less advanced in certain areas. In the 22nd century. This is also likely the case as well when the Romulans fought a war with earth and earths allys. In the mid 21st century I have no doubt that the Romulans were more advanced than earth because other races like the Vulcan's, Andorians, Tellerites had not yet shared technology with earth.

An Alliance. A Trade-Alliance. I believe the Romulans would be very interested in obtaining Warp Technology, and even if they are rather arrogant, humans would just be easier to trade with than to conquer. So the situation would be something like we trade with them for awhile, and sneaky as they are the Romulans would control whom we traded with until we where so intertwined with the Romulans that neither economies could survive without the other.

Good point. I think that's why the Romulans had a brief alliance with the Klingons, they even used Klingon ship designs for a while.

Precisely Atoz. A common mistake about the Romulans is to assume they are stupid, just because they are really paranoid. But they have every right to be... Those pesky Vulcans have been after them since they left home... And LeopardessGirl, Earth is allied with you because they want trade and a buffer in case of war. Human are not nice. And off cause it is me, Identity-fraud is Illegal in the Federation, besides it is about high time, people knew how fixes their sonic showers.
