I simply meant that nothing was being filmed.

Firstly, the introduction of a new canon and timeline was done so that future stories would be free to be told without worrying about contradictions. The franchise was dead before this, and I'd rather have a new universe than nothing. I don't see how completely changing the canon rejuvenates Star Trek. At best, that would give us something entirely new, which won't be Star Trek. So what's the point? Why not just go ahead and create a totally new "franchise"?

because that would mean that the creators would haft to actually try to be original and they will get more watchers if they call it star trek and use the same characters

I hope you don't mind if I add my two cents...
Personally, I have mixed feelings about the movie.
Storywise, it wasn't well thought out. For example, why didn't Nero blow up the Enterprise with the young Spock in it so he could have his revenge or Kirk became captain of the Enterprise so soon. Part of the reason Wrath of Khan was a great film is that you feel for Khan in a certain way. True, he was trying to destroy Kirk and crew. But you feel empathy for him about losing his wife and bitter for not starting a new civilization after what happened to Ceti Alpha V. For Nero, you don't feel a feel a thing.
The actors, overall, did a good job capturing the essence of the characters. I though McCoy and Scotty was the best. Uhura and Chekov was more three-dimensional with the screen time they had. The actors prevented me from totally disliking the movie.
Hopefully, the next film will be more polish storywise next time.

I'm just going to hope that they use this one as a learning experience and really make the second one rock. I really appreciate making the TOS universe actually look high-tech again.

Apparently Paramount Pictures wanted the ready-made audience of us Star Trek fans. It's just too bad that they couldn't show us more respect by respecting the original material.
