One thing i always found strange was the amount of female Trekkies, i always thought they would be very few in number however they apparently are not, any thoughts on this?

The Original Series was male-oriented, but TNG had more female characters and delved into the personal lives of the characters a little more, so I would not be surprised that TNG had just as many female fans as male. And did you ever notice the role reversal going on in VOY? The captain is female, the chief engineer is female, but the chief doctor is male, and the "ship's counselor" (I'm thinking of Neelix) is male!

And Seven of Nine was basically a female version of Data, when you think about it.

I never really understood why Data wanted to be more human: After all some of our most positive traits are: Destructive, Hypocritical, Evil, and Lying.

You're starting to sound like Garak! I always see humanity's positive traits as being love, loyalty, the desire to build and create... Yeah, I'm your glass-half-full positive attitude kind of person. Most of them time.

So you are the kind of person, that gives me this little hope that mankind can actually make something positive of itself, though it remains to be seen.
Of course, if I am having a really shitty day, you are also the kind of person, that if I can crush one of your naive hopes, I can go to bed, in the sound belief I have helped mankind take a step closer to the abyss.
Don't get me wrong, nothing pleases me more than watching true positive progress in mankind's attitude, after all with our improved communication within the last 150 years, we have really become much better people, but I can't help but think how long is it going to last.

Well I'm one... Personally it appeals to me because it's not just action type show but it deals with complex moral issues and is very intellectual and philosophical.

To me, that's always been the main appeal of Star Trek -- every episode gives you something to think about.

I just liked the aliens But seriously, I agree. Watching the series makes you think and I've found myself asking, "What would you do?" in certain moral situations.

I've got a wonderful book called "The Ethics of Star Trek", which walks you through most of the major theories of philosophy, using specific examples from Star Trek. I highly recommend it, if you like that kind of thing.
