Heres a good question -- a person on an away team says for example "Kirk to Enterprise", and sometimes it connects him to the Bridge, sometimes tot he Transporter room. How does it know which one he wants?

That is a good question. I'll have to think about it. Maybe it connects to both at the same time.

I reckon it might do that - unless there's some button he presses on the communicator that we can't see which identifies it or something?

The old TOS communicator does have three buttons on it, and we've seen Kirk use one of them so signal distress ("Day of the Dove"), but what about comm badges. They just have activate/deactivate don't they?

Possibly the way you press it gives you different channels. But no, I think you're probably on the right track -- the ship's computer probably sorts out which person you want when you announce who you're calling. Come to think of it, Uhura would have done the same thing on TOS. The call probably goes through her board first, and she decides on the context who Kirk really wants to talk to.

I can see that but how would she know the context without him having to repeat himself or perhaps she (or whoever is working...) has a set of quick commands for stuff like emergency beam outs?

I'm trying to think but sometimes Scotty takes over the bridge when Kirk is away, but sometimes he stays in the transporter room. Maybe she just automatically connects him with wherever Scott is? No that doesn't work either because sometimes he talks to whoever in on the bridge.

Is there any delay do you think in transmission? It doesn't sound like it usually. (I'm going to have watch carefully next time!)

The delay if any appears to be negligable, but then it may just be editted out to keep the story going!
This is kind of related to security. Apparently the computer can find your location just by your comm badge. But it also keeps track of you by other means too. Alexander isn't issued a commbadge, but in "Cost of Living" the computer was able to find him when Worf wanted to know why he was late for his counseling session.

Lwaxana didn't have a comm badge either, but the computer recognized her, and it even knew she was authorized to use the holodecks. That's what makes me think it's a sort of biometric thing. But I know there have been times when somebody has eluded the computer just by taking off his comm badge, but those times seem to be special cases. What do you think?

I wondered how the computer recognized Lwaxana Troi since she didn't have a comm badge. But how about this? In the 24th century presumably civilians carry PDAs or something like cell phones. It might be disguised as jewelry, or even carried in a pocket it could interface with any computer it comes in contact with.

How about deflector screens, or shields? They're both some kind of force field that extends around the ship, but what's the difference between them? Is there a difference? A lot of times the terms seem interchangable but other times they seem to refer to the same thing.

I think they are different things. In fact, there are three separate systems, deflector screens, defensive screens, and shields. Remember in "The Wrath of Khan", Kirk orders the defensive screens to be raised, Sulu acknowledges the order, glances at the defense subsystems monitor, and confirms that screens are raised! Then Sulu reports that Khan is locking weapons, so Kirk orders the shields to be raised, but Khan gets his shot in first.

I gathered they were separate, too. A lot of times in TOS I remember deflectors coming on automaticaly. I gather its an automatic system that scans the area in front of the ship and deflects any hazardous meteorites, pockets of radiation, and so on. That's a separate system from combat shields. Plus I suppose the defelctor system could be tied in to the shields in certain situations. Like in A TAste of ARmageddon when Anan 7 opens fire with the planetary disruptor banks and LT. Depaul reports the shields came on automatically.

When a ship travels faster than light, any stray hydrogen atom that gets in the way becomes deadly radiation unless something is done about it. That's what the deflector dish is for. It scans for such hazards and deflects them to the bussard collectors, where they go to feed the engines. In "The Best of Both Worlds" for example, Geordi came up with a way to use the main deflector dish to attack the Borg cube. When that failed, they burned out the deflector dish, and the Enterprise couldn't travel at warp speed until it was repaired.
