There's a podcast out there called "Now Playing" that started doing retrospective reviews on the previously-released 10 films. Here's their review of Wrath of Khan. www.nowplayingpodcast.com/Podcasts/NPPST02.MP3So, what are people's thoughts about this movie? I think Khan stands the test of time. I used to watch it all the time as a kid when we first got cable and then never watched it again until 20 years later! I feared that I wouldn't care for it as a 30-year old, but I watched the Director's Cut and I think I enjoy it more now. The added scenes (from the ABC broadcast) helps fill some minor gaps and the plot of the movie is so good!

"The Wrath of Khan" is a pretty solid drama, with much to like about it. But I can't call it my favorite because of some major holes in the plot that keep bugging me. First, how in the world can the science officers on the Reliant be so laughably incompetent? How can you mistake Ceti Alpha 5 for Ceti Alpha 6? What did they do, just count the planets? Mr. Beech said that the planet was "completely incapable of supporting life", when there were in fact over a dozen people living there! They found a lifeform, and they wanted to transplant it! I loved Dr. Marcus' reaction: "Something you can transplant? Something you can TRANSPLANT!!?"
Second, I don't know the crew complement of the Reliant, but it had to be something close to Enterprise's crew complement of 430. I don't care how strong Khan is, how in the world did he and ten people capture them all and boot them out of their own ship?
Third, the Genesis project itself strikes me as a little weird, because it implies that there is no difference between a planet without life and a planet with life that a little magic dust wouldn't fix.

Okay so I was watching Wrath of Khan again and suddenly I had an idea. What if the planet really is lifelss but Khan figured out a way to extract oxygen from the sand? Picture this, somewhere in those cargo contqiners is a jury rigged device bubbling out oxygen just into the containers. I know what you're going to say... Khan and his people were outside, so am I suggestingthe oxygen stayed close to the ground? No... the oxygen was just inside the containers. Khan and his people were HOLDING THEIR BREATH! They are supermen after all. What do you think?

I'd have to think about it, but it's an intriguing idea. He did say that only his "genetically superior intelligence" allowed them to survive. Sand is silicon dioxide, but it's extremely stable. It would take a lot of energy to persuade it to give up its oxygen, but then there could be other oxides in the soil. In fact, that's probably the reason they were outside in the first place, gathering ore.
Of course it still doesn't explain where their food and water came from, but it's a start.

I'm tempted to say that's why they kept the eels around, for food, but... yuck!
