In this episode Captain Picard is attacked while on a diplomatic mission with the landing party. In sickbay, he dies briefly and finds himself in the afterlife with Q. In his conversation with Q, it was his artificial heart that caused his death. Picard had many regrets about his undisciplined youth and wanted to change who he was in his youth. Q sent him back to the time right after graduation from the academy. This was just before the time he fought with the Naussicans who stabbed him through the heart. Picard did avoid the fight and changed who he was, but when Q brought him to the present time, he was a Lt junior grade serving as the assistant astrophysics officer. What He learned was that with maturity those qualities that got him into trouble benefited him in many ways when he learned to keep them in control. More on this later.

I didn't like this one because it suggests that one tiny thing can change your entire life. Well, it can to a certain extent, but the idea was way over-dramatized here, with Picard suddenly turning into a mewling wimp unable to stick his neck out to even the slightest extent. I found that idea sort of depressing.

I understand what you mean Atoz about Picard , but with Q involved, things do get more dramatic, and exaggerated!!

I Saw That One Too, As It Was Fascinating To See Q In The Afterlife, But It Was Interesting No Less!

I thought the scene of Picard talking with Q about spending eternity together was kind of funny, because Picard made a remark that he could not believe the universe was designed so badly.

I agree with that. The look on Picard's face when Q claimed to be God was priceless.
But when you think about it, being sent back into your own past, to relive something that happened years ago with the knowledge you have now is kind of unfair. Unfair on YOU, I mean. You're being asked to second-guess yourself.

You have a very good point Atoz!! If it were me being sent back to my past, it would be too great of a temptation to change things in my life that were bad or could have been better. This could have both good and disastrous results.

To my mind, that was one of the "over-dramatized" things I mentioned earlier. Seriously, if you were as old as Picard and you were still a Lieutenant J.G., would you still be in Starfleet? It would seem it would be much easier for him to hunt for a teaching position or something, if he were that timid.
Thinking of this some more, I have precisely the opposite problem from Picard. When I was younger, I was once at a crossroads where I could have moved to a larger city where I didn't know anybody, but I chose to play it safe and stay in my hometown. Sometimes when I'm feeling unsatisfied with my life, I wonder how it would have been different if I had chosen differently. But just because you know how one fork in the road turned out, that's no guarantee the other fork would have been any better. All I know for sure is that it would have been different.
Whenever we make a decision like this, we're not only chosing a path, we're throwing the dice too. There's no way of telling if the same decision would even work out the same if you did it over again. All you can do is tell yourself you made the best decision you could at the time, with the information at your disposal.

Very well put Atoz!! When it comes to life's decisions the choices we make change things for us, sometimes for the better or worse. All we can do is make the best choices possible at the time when it comes to any given situation. A person can second guess their past choices to the point of insanity which will effect their choices in the present causing further turmoil. Maybe The alternate Picard stayed in star fleet because he was playing it too safe and thought a change was to risky.

What if?
is the hardest and longest question.
There are quite a few things would change in my life, but in doing so, I would stop being the person I am now (something i don't think I'd like)
The answer is, don't second guess yourself and always look to the future.

True, that's sort of what I had in mind. Each time an "alternate" version of you makes a different decision from the one you did, he becomes a slightly different person from you. After a certain number of forks in the road, he would no longer be recognizable as "you". Just deal with what you've got. That's all you can do. Picard found that out the hard way!

Very well put Atoz. Just like the 2 Rikers who live 2 very different lives for 8 years, all because Riker was duplicated in a transporter malfunction. They became very different from each other in some ways.

I think that this was my favorite episode. It was also wierd with Picard and Q, especially with Q being someone that Picard really did not like to have anything to do with due to the fact that he was immature with things. It really shows the fact that Q did have a good side, but it was hard to see.
