In this episode, Enterprise finds a human colony descended from people abducted from earth in 19th century by a race called the "Scagorans" They abducted the humans for slave labor to build their colony ,but were over thrown by by the humans, led by a man named "Cooper Smith" 6 months later. The humans or most of them hated the Scagorans and called them scags. They had not advanced technologically at all and it was like the old west. This is one of my favorite episodes. I thought it was a very interesting story! More on this later... What do you think?

It was a pretty good story, definitely a change of pace from what they usually do. I sort of had to strain to keep from rolling my eyes whenever Archer did his Clint Eastwood impression, but otherwise it was pretty enjoyable.

Well, when he stares back at the sheriff and says, "Just passin' through." That's what I was thinking of. Another point of interest is how little scientific advancement that culture had made in the four hundred years they were on that planet. Probably because there were so few of them. They mentioned several other towns, but I didn't get a sense of how many there were.

I was think about the very same thing about them not advancing technologically. They could have advanced themselves By studying the technology of the wrecked Scagoran ship even though there wasn't much left of it and it was in pieces. One of the people "Bethany", on the old west planet talked with Captain Archer about the progress earth had made and expressed that we have not advanced and "Were still shooting each other." From the "Enterprise" Time The colony was actually just under 300 hundred years in existence. Bethany, who was a School teacher turned out to be 1/4 Sacgoran and 3/4 Human. The number of towns the colonists had was not mentioned that I'm aware of. My best guess is between just over a dozen to maybe twice that many, but I'm just speculating on this one.

In order to progress simply by studying the wrecked ship, you would have had to have people who were capable of understanding it. Plus, I would think they wouldn't have wanted to mess around with something that was that far beyond them. On the other hand, they have guns, so somewhere on the planet there must be an iron foundry, mines for sulfur and saltpeter, and so forth. Plus they may have progressed in other ways that we didn't get to see in our brief glimpse of the planet. (I sort of touched on this idea in my story, "Arachne's Curse", which has a similar situation.)
I would think that in a harsh environment like that, it would have been all they could do to survive and keep their numbers up. And there was no competition from rival cultures.

Atoz. It would be difficult for people from around 1870 to understand the advanced technology. Its not hard for me to imagine at least some of them who were the smartest and most curious about it not to have tried to understand it. As far as the guns were concerned, I just assumed they had forges and other natural rescourses....seemed natural to me for them to use their 19th century technology. As I recall The climate was hot and dry. which would make it more difficult to grow crops.

Another thing that bothered me about this story -- given the flat, open terrain around the town, they would have had to land the shuttlepod miles away to avoid being seen, and walk into town! Wouldn't you think they would be suspicious having strangers suddenly turn up without horses?

As I recall they were suspicious of the landing party and did ask where their horses were. T'Pol mentioned about their horses expiring outside the town somewhere.

Yes, now that you mention it I think she did. I'm just wondering if they weren't tired running back and forth to the shuttlepod! Thank goodness the transporter was eventually perfected, or these pre-contact situations would be a lot harder.

They must have used the transporter or they were in good enough shape to walk/run several miles several times in the course of a few days!

Gene Roddenberry cut his teeth on Westerns. Did this have any references to his old movies?

I have no idea if this was a reference to Gene Roddenberry's old westerns. It would be interesting to know!
