I actually had to vote for Katherine Pulaski. She was a top notch doctor (she performed Picard's heart transplant), plus in the short time we knew her she gave the impression that she had a wide range of interests and expertise outside of medicine. Like when she pointed out the limitations of Data's algorithmic thinking processes, that he wasn't capable of truly original thought. And at the time she said it, she was right -- Data wasn't really capable of it in those days. [And of course, being played by gorgeous Diana Muldaur from TOS doesn't hurt!]
Many people call her a curmudgeon (I know because I've started this same poll in three different Star Trek forums), but I can't really understand why. The first time we saw her was the second season episode "The Child". Picard was waiting on the Bridge for his new CMO to report in, and when she didn't, he had the computer locate her -- in Ten Forward. He marched down there, all set to chew her up one side and down the other, only to find that she wasn't enjoying herself -- she was with a patient (Deanna Troi, who for once in her life needed a counsellor herself). And in the later episode "The Icarus Factor", she said of her patients, "When they hurt, I hurt."

Right now, I can't decide which of the 2 doctors was better. I'm going to have to think about it for a while and get back to you on this one. To be honest, I never really thought about this before!

Doctor Crusher all the way. They should have renewed Gates contract for the second season though. Doctor Crusher did not seem as cold as Puluski.

I liked Pulaski. Might be because I skipped the first year and began watching TNG at year two. I thought she was an interesting and a very dedicated doctor. And I have to disagree with mgomez, I didn't find her cold at all. She was involved with most of the characters and even shared a close moment with Worf when Wesley invited her to be a part of the Klingon ritual. It would be fun to see how and where TNG would of gone with Pulaski aboard.

She was only on that one season, and I've noticed people often describe her as "cold". As I indicated above, I don't really understand why. She was always joining in on off-duty activities. I suppose it could be because of the way she related to Data at the very beginning. Since most people like Data, I can see how it would be hard to forgive her for that!

I liked both doctors equally. The actress who played Dr Pulaski also played on the original Star Trek in at least one episode.

I'm not saying I have anything against Dr. Crusher. I just liked Pulaski a little better.
Diana Muldaur played Astrobiologist Ann Mulhall in "Return to Tomorrow" (where they found the three ancient lifeforms embedded in Recepticles) -- and Miranda Jones in "Is There In Truth No Beauty?"

Crusher. You know, it could be that people dislike Pulaski because she was only on the worst season of the show.

Worst season? I have to disagree. I thought Season Two was one of the best, and Katherine went a long way towards making it the best.

I tend to like more of the episodes better that were done later in the series more than ones that were made earlier in the series!
