This is interesting! If the Doomsday weapon was not a sentient robot, it's builders could have programed it to respond this way!

Yeah, but that might have just been it's programmed tactics.

The doomsday weapon was programed to ignore ships beyond a certain radius, but they never said what that radius was. It may be variable taking into consideration the size and power output of the ship. I wonder if it could detect a ship through a cloaking device?

It must be very costly for the doomsday weapon to operate because of it consuming whole planets much larger than itself to convert it into usable energy. It's weapon being pure anti-proton would require a lot of energy to produce and there fore a lot of matter needs to be converted to energy for this!!

That's what Spock said: "It is self-sustaining as long as there are planetary bodies for it to feed on." Then if it's a doomsday weapon, pretty much by definition its designers aren't too worried about the cost.

I agree Atoz about the lack of fuel efficiency. The builders of the doomsday weapon had the purpose of planetary destruction in mind against their enemies!

I thoroughly enjoyed this episode. I have, unfortunately, not as yet seen the remastered version. I was just thinking about this episode the other day as someone on another forum painted a picture that looked like the "Planet Killer".

This one is on my Top Ten list -- a good mixture of mystery and action, which is what I look for in an episode.

One of the interesting things about this episode is the fact that Decker's uniform patch is shaped differently than Kirk's. And in "The Omega Glory", Captain Tracy's patch is also different. This suggests that the original Constitution class starships all had differently shaped patches.

Not just Constitution class - all ships. They're supposed to be mission patches used to show what ship someone is assigned to. Of course, the use is a bit patchy - especially in the new film, where the Kelvin has the same patch. Of course you could claim that the Kelvin's patch became Enterprise's later as the two ships probably didn't overlap even in the prime reality as it'd be over though the Enterprise lasted 40 years so it's possible as the Kelvin probably would've been about 20 - 30 years old when the Enterprise was launched.

Or you could see this as yet another continuity problem with the new film. But no, it's not entirely consistent. When the Defiant showed up in the ENT series (the cross-universe thing), their uniforms also had the Enterprise patch.

It would make sense for each ship to have its own unit patch, when you think about it. =
