In "That Which Survives", in addition to D'Amato (geologist), Losira also killed two engineering specialists, Ensign Wyatt (transporter) and Watkins, who was an engineer grade four (which I would guess is something like Petty Officer E-4). Two more red shirts!

I haven't seen XI yet.
In "Requiem for Methuselah", 3 crewmen (unnamed) were killed by Rigellian fever.

So, Season Three --
In "And The Children Shall Lead", they lost 2 security guards (red shirts) In "Wink of an Eye", they lost Compton (security) In "Elaan of Troyius", they lost Watson, an engineer (red shirt) In "That Which Survives", they lost D'amato (sciences), Ensign Wyatt and crewman Watkins (engineers) In "Requiem for Methuselah", they lost 3 crewmen (unnamed) to Rigellian fever.
Total: 10 crewmen, 5 red shirts.
***
Assuming I haven't missed anybody, we are now in a position to draw some conclusions. Out of a total of 53 casualties, 26 are red shirts (engineers and security), 7 were gold shirts, 6 were blue shirts, 14 were not identified. If we assume the 14 unidentified victims were more or less evenly split between the three sections (lets say 5 gold, 4 blue, and 5 red), that gives us the following stats:
Total: 53 Gold shirts: 12, or 22% Blue shirts: 10, or 20% Red shirts: 31, or 58%, just over half
Out of those 31 red shirts, 21 were Security, or 39%. So yes, it does look like red shirts take up a disproportionate number of body bags, but the vast majority are Security who were not so much singled out for the color of their shirts as they were just doing their jobs.

Well thank you. I've wanted to do something like this for years, but couldn't because I didn't have the entire series on DVD. Now I do.

When you are done with this project we will know the total red-shirt mortality! I watched "The Enterprise incident yesterday" Its the one where they trick the Romulans and steal one of their cloaking devices. There were no red shirt deaths in this episode.

Slight correction -- Watching "Arena" again, I notice that the Gorn also took out Lang. That brings the total up to 54, but since he was a gold shirt, it doesn't change the conclusion.

You have done a good job on the statistics Atoz. Which Trek series are you doing next?

Why should I? This topic was intended to start a conversation, not as a one-man show. If I think of another topic like this, I'll probably keep it to myself. I don't want to post topics that no one is interested in.

The topic does have a certain amount of morbidness, but I find the statistics interesting!!

It's interesting, I only get to see what's shown on television and given it's mostly Enterprise and Voyager at the moment hardly anybody dies so...

Don't forget Lt. Leslie! The red shirt who survived so many episodes, died drastically thanks to the vampire cloud, then started walking around the ship again a few days later. This is really interesting, though! When I began to watch Seasons 2 and 3, I'd point out a random reddie and say 'he's gonna die!' I was almost sad when some red shirt got a main part in an episode and didn't die. << >>
