I've been reading a lot of Trek novels lately and I'm enjoying many of the authors' portrayals of the original Enterprise crew and the adventures they may have had that were never in the television show. Many of the novels are concerned with events towards the end of the crew's careers, but few seem to look at how it all started.
So my question is, does anyone have any recommendations of books that look at how it all began? Specifically first meetings between Kirk and McCoy or others? I love beginnings much more than endings, they're usually much more upbeat and forshadowing is always fun. So far the best I've found is Enterprise: The First Adventure.
Sorry, I can't help. I don't consider any of the novels to be canon -- that is, they are not official. I also don't consider the "new movie" canon either. In "Courtmartial", Kirk says that he spent his "whole life" training for command decisions. That does not sound like the slacker we saw in the movie to me.

I haven't read any "real" novels, only fan made. The movie Atoz 77 was different to how it was in the original seris becuase of the fact that Kirk's dad died, which would have influenced what happend in young Kirk's life. Its an altinate reality, like a pardox.
(Alien Race, Great Cat, Star Cat.) Nothing is impossible, just very improable.

I don't read much of the novels either. Although, I must say, Shatner's 'Collision Course' was marvelous, in my opinion. It's all about Kirk and Spock and how they met. It was a lot of fun to read. Some of the books by other people, I really don't like because the character's aren't portrayed that well, but when you read a book written by Captain Kirk himself, you cant go wrong. Sorry, but it doesn't have McCoy in it yet. Cant wait for the next novel.

And that's exactly why it's not canon. The movie may be good (althought personally I don't think so), but if it takes place in an alternate, paradoxical universe, by definition it can't be consistant with the Original Series. That's what I mean by not canon.
As far as the novels go, any Star Trek fan can write a story about how he thinks they all got together, and it would be just as "valid" as any of the novels I've seen. Plus, I don't see that Shatner has any particular claim, just because he played Kirk on the screen.

It would of been intresting if they had actually made a Star Trek movie, which included all the details from previos movies and epsodes. That would of been intresting. I don't think it crossed there minds.

Akira: Exactly. I'm not saying the new films are bad or anything but they're just not Star Trek as I came to expect it; those plus nearly every game released since Armada/BC/Elite Force 2 has been chronic there doesn't seem much hope.
