I may have done a thread this one before, but due to inactivity it has been deleted.....I'm reviving it!! I watched this episode the other day. It was the one with the explosion in engineering. To summarize an Admiral came aboard with her staff one of which was Betazoid and conducted an investigation looking for spys and saboteurs. The did uncover some things but it went too far! They got paranoid and looked for more conspiracies until Captain Picard put a stop to it. More soon to come!!!!

I remember that episode! Very good! Does anyone remember what episode it was when Picard drew a smiley face in some steam? That was hilarious!

I know what you are referring to. It was a later episode involving a Romulan ship, but I can't remember the name of the episode.
There were several hearings in "The Drumhead" They caught the Klingon spy who cleverly used his medical condition to steal information to give to the Romulans. It was information on the Enterprise's warp core.

I've never seen the Drumhead but the one with the smiley face was called "Timescape" season six, episode twenty-five.

The hearings in the "Drumhead" reminded me of many bad things that have happened in the past to innocent people labeled as heretics by the people in charge who were the true heretics and very guilty of many evil and cruel things!!!

The fun connection with this episode is that the retired admiral is Norah Satie...and I just watched "All Good Things" (the TNG finale) and when Picard is in the past, he mentions in his command-speech aboard the Enterprise's docking bay that he's been assigned to command the ship by Admiral Norah Satie. Nice connection for continuity between "The Drumhead," which is nice to see.

I'm impressed trElanE!! I never noticed the connection before! Most details don't get by me, but this one sure did! I like it when events form one episode "All good things" and "The Drumhead" have continuity!!

This episode is always timely, because as Picard said, there are always people so concerned about our security from our enemies (real or imagined) that they are willing to sacrifice "a little freedom". I'm not sure there is any such thing as giving up "a little freedom".
Also -- I can imagine coding information in the form of protein sequences, but how do they retrieve these proteins again when they want them? Any ideas? And wouldn't the body's immune system mobilize to attack proteins that it doesn't recognize?
And how did Simon Tarses get a Romulan grandfather in the first place?

Nothing is said about Simon Tarses's Romulan Grandfather. He could have been a defector, captured, passed himself off as a Vulcan, which would mean he didn't have the ridges many Romulans have. If his Romulan Grandfather were a defector and helped the Federation, this could help to vindicate him, but lying on his Star Fleet Application is major problem!

If he were a defector Starfleet Security would have watched him. His grandson would have been caught as soon as he made his application dont you think?

Yes! I have thought of this Luke! Since Simon Tarses was not caught, your ideas about him and his grandfather are wrong!! There are other many possibilities about Simon Tarses's Romulan Grandfather. He could have passed himself off as Vulcan thus eluding the authorities. The matter could have been a sensitive one and things were kept secret about his Romulan heritage. He may have been deemed a low risk or trustworthy to a point. If there was any problems, they would have been mentioned! Simon Tarses lied on his Star Fleet application because of fear of prejudice. He might have been OK if he was truthful about his heritage. Nothing is said so this is all speculation.

not every defector is caught. most are that sly enough to pass off for the average man. Most people cant really tell between romulans and vulcans because they both can hide their emotions very well, im sure mr. tarses grandfather could have passed off as a vulcan if that were the case. Mr. Tarses was a young man upset about his heritage. he did not want that to stop what he wanted to do, so he changed it so he could join starfleet, unfortunately they found out, but he still stayed because he was loyal all the way. as for the protein sequencer, i believe with the injection it protects it from being broken down by antibodies or anything else in the body, maybe a klingons anatomy might be equipped to do so. something in his injections he regularly took? who knows. wow thats bizzare trelane i never realized that, wow good for you for noticing that. thats a brainbuster
