Hey everyone, need a little help.
I run a science fiction-based website, and although I have been a long-time sci-fi fan, I never became attached to Star Trek. In January, though, I'm going to start a project where I try to make a ST-lover out of myself. I'm gonna chronicle weekly exposures to the show on a series of weekly blog posts on the site throughout the year.
I'm going to various Star Trek boards and asking everyone this is question: What's the best way for me to come to love Star Trek? I was originally thinking that I'd probably just watch the first two seasons straight through, as that is obviously what created many a Trek fan back in the '60s, but now I'm getting some advice to start with TNG instead. I might do a back-and-forth: a few TNGs, a few TOSs -- maybe picking the best of each series.
I'd like to know what you think. Could you give me any advice?
Thanks.

It's always good to meet a new Trekkie! I wish I could go back and experience Star Trek for the first time again!
There are five Star Trek series (not counting the Animated Series), and they all have a different feel to them. You just have to find the one you like best. If you look around these forums, you'll see Trekkies who watch VOY or DS9, but who have never seen an episode of TOS or ENT! I myself post a lot of topics in TOS and TNG, but I rarely go into the DS9 section, simply because I'm not familiar enough with it to have an intelligent opinion.
I suggest you watch one episode of each. You could ask various people which their favorites are, but you'd get lots of different answers. Or you could just pick a title that sounds good to you. Once you find a series that catches your imagination, concentrate on that one for awhile. But don't try to cram an entire season at once! Anyway, we'll still be here if you have any more questions, and if you just want to gush over how GREAT Star Trek is!

Hey, thanks a bunch for the reply. I've decided I'm going to alternate one episode at a time between TOS and TNG, starting at the beginning of each and going straight through, one or two episodes per week, for probably at least one year.
I'm going to write a blog entry for each individual episode I watch. I'll post back here when it's up in case you're interested.

Yes, I'd be very interested. Um... I also ought to warn you that season one of TNG was not all that hot. I actually didn't like it myself until season two.

You started with The Man Trap, which is a good place to start. You can already see the relationships among the varous characters. One of my favorite parts is early on, when Uhura is trying to get Spock into some ordinary small talk.
"Why don't you tell me that I'm an attactive young lady? Why don't you ask me if I've ever been in love, or tell me what your planet Vulcan is like on a lazy summer evening when the moon is full?"
Spock: "Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura."
"I'm not surprised, Mr. Spock."

"I'm not surprised, Mr. Spock."
That really was a good line.

Okay, entry #2 is up if you're interested. It's TNG, not TOS, but I'm posting it here because it's most pertinent to this topic. I hope you don't mind. I'll stop updating you guys here if you want because I can see that it's a little spammy for me to continue doing so. Just know that I'll be keeping this up weekly over at the site. Here's the link: scifiblock.com/blog/robert-ring/learning-to-love-star-trek-part-2.htmEnjoy!

I'm enjoying your reviews from a fresh perspective. I'm wondering if you post these on a particular day (Monday, Tuesday...), so that I can remember to stop by at the right time?

Thanks for the complement! So far I've been doing them every Friday, but I'm probably going to switch to Thursday from now on. Either way, you can always just check in at the end of the week. But the plan for now is Thursday.
