While on a star mapping expedition, the Enterprise is accosted by Balok, Captain of the Fesarius -- a gigantic spherical spaceship a mile in diameter -- and accused of trespassing into the territory of the "First Federation". Balok decides that the Enterprise is "obviously the product of a primitive and savage culture" and must therefore be destroyed. The crew is given ten minutes to make preparations.
This certainly sounds like one of those "no-win" situations that Admiral Kirk was destined to talk to Saavik about much later. And you can see why he doesn't like "no-win" situtations. Plus if you look carefully you notice that Uhura is wearing a gold command uniform in this one.
I have fond memories of this episode not so much for the plot (which is pretty lame when you think about it) but because it is a study in contrasts. You have the contrast between the Fesarius (a mile long, but with it turns out a crew of only one) vs. Enterprise (much smaller but with a crew of over 400); Bailey's panic vs. Spock's calm; Spock's logic vs. Kirk's intuition; Balok vs. his alter ego. And of course Balok's laugh is so infectious, you can't help but like him.

Interesting review of the "Corbomite Maneuver" Atoz! I also liked Balok's laugh. What was in that Trania drink Balok liked so much? It looked like orange juice.... Has "The First Federation" ever been mentioned again in Star Trek? I don't recall ever being brought up in another episode or series.
All too often interesting things in star Trek are only mentioned once!

In "Journey to Babel", a couple of the delegates are very small men with gold skin. I often wondered if they were from the First Federation.

Finally meeting Balok was worth all the trouble he cuased I think. Do you think that ship might have been more of aspace station or something? I mean a ship that size with only one person on b oard?

I got the impression it was a modular sort of ship, like the Suliban's ships in ENT. Or maybe they used a different type of power source (a synthetic singulary, maybe) that required the huge size.

I was thinking it seemed like it was a stationary thing just guarding the border. Like it wasnt expected to move around that much the way a starshipdoes.

That's what I was thinking, too, that the Fesarius was more like a supply or repair depot, possibly run by automated machinery or robots for the most part, although we didn't get the chance to see any of them.
