the orignal meaning of Yeoman was a servant or attendant. So a captain's yeoman is probably equivalent to an executive assistant, taking care of administration details, making sure he reads the reports he's suppose to, and so on.
Kirk semed to go through a lot of them though, didnt he? the first was Janice Rand.

Hehehe, but it's Kirk. I'm not surprised he went through them quickly.

I don't think Luke is thinking of "going through" them in the same sense you are! Janice Rand was the one with the big beehive hairdo. She did last longer than the others. But after she left, it seemed like there was a new one every week. The only ones whose names I remember are Tonia Barrows (from "Shore Leave"), Teresa Ross (from "The Squire of Gothos") and Martha Landers (from "The Apple").

Ha! *giggles* Good point. It's true that he probably didn't go through them like that, but there were a lot of yeoman and it seemed they were all women. Were there ever any men? *cocks head*

In the Corbomite Manuever, Kirk mentions that having a female yeoman was unusual, but generally the ones we always say carrying messages and reports for him to sign were all women.

And in several episodes, a yeoman was sent along with the landing party to keep a record of what happened. That's apparently another responsibility of theirs. Why don't you think we ever saw yeomen in TNG or any of the other series?

Possibly by then their job had been dispersed amongst other crewmembers or in fact technology may have invalidated the need for yeoman even as communication and scanning technology improved. And in Enterprise they may not have realised the need or had the need for them yet (seeing as crews and ships were much smaller at the time).

We often see Picard reading reports and things on his ready room screen, so that would be my guess, too. the computer system probalby takes the place of a yeoman.

Kirk had an office, but we rarely saw him use it. That's why he needed a yeoman!

Okay I understand that a relative newcomer wouldn't know most of these. Some of them were pretty darn obscure, even for me!
