I was watching part one last night, and as always, I was struck by what a huge mistake I thought Riker was making in passing up command of the USS Melbourne (even though the decision proved moot as the Melbourne was destroyed by the Borg before he had the chance to take command).
What are your thoughts? I don't have anything at all against Riker, but wouldn't it have been interesting to have Commander Shelby as First Officer?

It was pretty clear to me that he had nearly talked himself into it. Too bad the Melbourne was destroyed. I really am glad he stayed, though. I didn't take to Shelby at all. I thought she was too cocky.

I don't think so. When she beamed down to Jouret IV, I think Riker overreacted (probably because she beat him at poker the night before). If you think about it, she was right. If she had waited for him, the "Borg footprint" might have been washed away by the rain. Plus, Data was there with her, neither he nor O'Brien questioned her authority to beam down.

They might have assumed she had already informed Riker. Yes, she may have been right about beaming down early but a comcall to Riker wouldn't have been that hard would it?
How would Picard have reacted to Riker in that same situation do you think?

Yes, she may have been right about beaming down early but a comcall to Riker wouldn't have been that hard would it? Not if it was early in the morning and she didn't want to wake him up. But I see what you're getting at. She was also trying to assert herself, show that she was eager and ready to get things done. Good point. I'm trying to imagine Picard as First Officer and Riker as a visiting officer. Yes, you're right, he would have "snapped him back so fast, he'd think he was first year cadet again."

I got the impression that's just the way she was. She was pushy and used to having things her own way. But I guess it would have been interesting having her as first officer, except that I like Riker better.

I can't argue too much with that. It's just that he had already turned down command of two ships. What was he waiting for?

I wonder if he was so comfortable on Enterprise and/or had seen so much of what front-line command really brings that the prospect of his own command seemed all the more daunting ambitious though he may be.

Yes, he said that he had gotten too comfortable in his talk with Troi. As Luke said, I think he was talking himself into it, and if the Melbourne hadn't been destroyed, he would have taken it.
