Lets talk about Trek techology in general, starting with turbolifts! How do those things work? An elevator that goes side to side as well as up and down? It has to be self-contained, right, like an aircar. But would you like to be the ensign who has to check every single turbocar every morning to see if its batteries are charged up?

I have long hoped someone would start a topic like this -- not me, because I'm not engineering inclined. But obviously each car doesn't have completely self-contained propulsion, as we saw in the TNG episode "Disaster", when the turbolift system failed and Picard and the children were caught literally hanging between decks.

How did you get the impression it moves side to side? I never got that impression myself but I may have missed something.
Unfortunately for deep contribution to this topic I am no engineer either.
I imagine that there would be some computer system for checking each turbolift's systems were functioning and a weekly maintenance check at least to make sure the computer's telling you the right thing. (The computer at my work's a complete imbecile!)

Its more noticable in TOS but sure it does. It runs down towards the middle of the ship, then to get to the engineering section, the car turns and goes laterally.
Maybe its like a broadcast power system. The cars use virtual cables made of tractor beams, and the power for the car comes in over the beam. So when the system goes down it just stops.

Okay how about the automatic door sensors? Id suspect some kind of magnetic field which detects a body approaching, but you notice people walking right past doors in the corridors and they don't open. They open only when somebody turns to go in.

Maybe there's some automated system that's designed to detect people facing the door and/or about to walk into it as opposed to walking past it?

This is a good question. It must be a pretty sophisticated sensor set up. In TNG they have those pads at the door with a call button, but have you ever seen anyone stop at his or her own door and key in an access number? I haven't. It seems to me the door knows when an authorized person steps up to it, and opens automatically.

Do you think it could be linked to whatever universal translator tech they carry? I was going to say com-badges but even when they leave them behind it always seems to work but there must be some way they communicate when their tech's been stolen so it must be implanted somehow. I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned that Ferengi have something in their ear.

Somehow I don't see them using body implants on Star Trek. But even in the twenty-first century, they were starting to develop bio-sensors that respond to the particular salt content of a person's body (just for example). The door sensors could be keyed to their owner's biorhythm.

That was my first thought but it seems to work with non-fleet personnel who don't have badges or officers who've lost/forgotten/otherwise misplaced their badges.

In TOS I don't think Ive even seen call buttons on the doors but the door buzzes when a visitor appraoches anyway. So Id guess biometric sensors is the answer. I also notice that Kirk never stops to buzz either. In THe Enemy Within he just barges into Janice Rand's quarters.

Perhaps the Captain has certain priveleges? I'll have to watch the episode to be certain what happened there. I'm curious about the UT now, how does it work if they don't have any tech on them - say planets where they've been taken hostage and had their badges/communicators and so on removed. They still understand the aliens!

That rarely seems to happen in TNG, but it happened all the time in TOS. It does present a puzzle.
