If, god forbid, Janeway got killed off somehow in Voyager who do you think would be a better , more experienced and interesting captain : Tuvok or Chakotay? I find it hard to choose because each of them have there upsides and down sides. Chakotay is an experienced Captain with well used tactics from the Marquis. He is commander so also has experience as Captain on Voyager. But I think sometimes he is a bit too soft. Tuvok has been in Starfleet for a long time. He is, as a Vulcan, very logical but I think sometimes you need more than just logic and education to be a good captain. So who do you think would be a more beneficial captain for voyager?? Dax123 x

Gosh, I wish I watched VOY more often so I could give an intelligent opinion on this. My natural instinct is Chakotay simply because he's the First Officer. Tuvok was only a lieutenant if I remember correctly, and a security officer at that, not my first choice for captain.
How about Tom Pais? Would he be good captain material, do you think?

I'm really not sure about Tom Paris. I'm afraid he might make too many risks and some of the things he has put towards Janeway as advice have not been the best ideas but then again that's my opinion. The thing with Chakotay is yes, he's First Officer but he'd only have been in Star Fleet for several years, if that depending on when Janeway was killed off. Tuvok has a lot of experience in Star Fleet but Chakotay has a lot of experience as being a captain of a ship.... hmmm it is very confusing but I would have to say Chakotay too.

Tom is bad idea for captain, despite how much I adore the character.
Tuvok was an instructor at Starfleet Academy, he served under the command of Captain Sulu, was around for the Praxis incident that got Kirk and McCoy sentenced. He was also supposed to have been on board the ship when Kirk was 'killed', (only they forgot to stick on his Vulcan ears in the final take of the movie.) He made it to Lt. Commander and served along Janeway for a ubber long time. So he has a lot of experience. I think his logic might get in the way too much.
Chakotay does not seem to take enough risk required to be a captain. He's more of a pacifistic type person. No offense to Chakotay fans. The only reason he took those risk missions is under orders. Not to say he could not captain Voyager. I just don't feel he'd be the better choice; if they were given a choice on who should be next captain.

A pacifist? And he started out as a Maqui captain? What's wrong with this picture?

Down the line while serving aboard Voyager he got...softer I suppose. If I'm not mistaken (I'm tired right now.) Chakotay only joined the Maquis to defend his home colony, or so he says. And personally I think he was made 'captain' by those on the ship with him. The Maquis didn't have the same command structure as Starfleet. I'm thinking you worked together, and whoever had the better ideas or better training (if you dropped out of the academy) you got a 'high rank'.

As I've said, I'm not terribly well-versed in VOY, but from what I've seen of the Maquis, you're right about that. They're not a disciplined force like Starfleet is. As a matter of fact, they seemed to reject discipline. I do remember the episode where Torres was nominated for chief engineer, and she had such a huge chip on her shoulder, I kept thinking she shouldn't be chief engineer. She might know engines, but an officer has to be able to get his/her team to work together.

I don't know, I'm more inclined to go for Tuvok but then he doesn't seem to inspire the commitment in others' that Chakotay does.
And I know what you mean, I think Tom COULD make a good Captain *eventually* but he'd need to mature more and get experience, there's no way he'd've been ready during the show's run.
