Since my main topic for the forum is Vulcan Emotion Control, I've taken the bulk of my other thread and have transferred it to this appropriate thread:
MONASTIC:
The reason I use the name "monastic" is because I was always impressed with the Vulcan emotion control. Consequently,I now practice Buddhist meditation, and will later post my experiences with that meditation to show how it parallels and, in certain aspects, can even become identical to Vulcan emotion control.

Glad to see you, Monastic. I personally have never been to a convention of any kind, so you're one up on me. George Takei... I haven't seen him apart from a guest appearance on "The Big Bang Theory" awhile back!
I've also done a little study on Buddhism and I look forward to talking with you about it. One thing that impresses me is that the Buddha teaches that anger and disappointment come from our expectations. We should merely accept what happens. If we do not expect, we cannot be disappointed. Does that sound like what you mean?

Monastic:
Thank you, Luke and Atoz, for the cordial welcome.
(Now about the Buddhism) In a sense, Atoz, you are right about emotional problems arising from expectations. Although Buddhism would use different words, namely attachment and non-attachment.
Along those lines, the way I see it, in Vulcan matrimony, the wife and husband are Not actually emotionally attached. They show tenderness toward each other, but Not affectionate attachment.
Keep in mind that the relationship shown between Ambassador Sarek and Amanda was not typical at all, involving as it did a marriage between Vulcan and Human.

Okay, how can you have a marriage without being emotionally attached? What is the difference between attached and non-attached?

Without even referring to Buddhism, I can instead refer to a (paraphrased) quote from the other Vulcan, Tuvok, in which he said that his relationship to his wife and family is not emotional but rather that they are an integral part of himself so that without them, he does not feel complete. As I said, that quote is a paraphrasing, so I need you or any knowledgeable fan to provide the quotation verbatim.

so the key word here seems to be "emotional". Can you be attached to someone but not emotionally? "An integral part of himself" sounds like an emotional statement to me.

I'm not an expert obviously, but I understood that the Buddhist ideal of non-attachment doesn't mean that we can't feel love and affection for one another. In fact we are supposed to feel the same universal love and affection for everyone in the world, including our bitterest enemies.
