I have read a thread about this on another star trek forum and have discussed this topic with Atoz on...I don't remember the thread.......though. I would like to open more discussion about this......I don't mean to be repeating myself concerning my discussions with Atoz about this!!!.....Many federation ships have a primary hull...saucer section and a secondary hull of drive section....The Prometheus could separate into 3 sections and I know 2 of them were warp capable....but what about ..lets say any 2 hulled federation or even alien ship for that matter having a back up low powered warp core for low warp flight to escape in the event of a sudden catastrophe in its primary hull. I think its a good idea......Full impulse may not be enough to always escape safely from some disaster....What if this happened out in deep space or far away from help....at impulse it would take years if not decades or longer to get back home if there was no possibility for a rescue. A back up core in a federation saucer section capable of warp 1 to 4 would be a necessity! The primary hulls of fed. ships must have an engineering section to operate their impulse drives. I don't see why there would be a problem with adding a small warp core to it...also adding a small set of nacelles as well...I would like some feed back, thoughts, and ideas about this

I made a more detailed post of this topic on another Trek forum and got some interesting feedback, which I will post later...have to go back and check to accurately relay the info.

Since the saucer sections of fed. star ships would have an engineering section to operate their impulse drives when separated it wouldn't take too much to add small warp coils/nacelles to it. Even if this small warp core was a fusion warp core like they used in the 21st century, (The Phoenix) and ships built soon after, it could be greatly enhanced with 24th century technology to go faster than warp one or warp one point 1 to warp one point 4. It may be able to reach speeds within the warp 2-3 point something range.

This is an intriguing idea, but I think the reason this isn't done more often is that separating the hulls isn't exactly a common maneuver. It's done in emergency situations, when the separated hull is used as a lifeboat. If you're going to go to the trouble to building separate warp drives in each hull, why not put a warp drive in each escape pod? It would be that same logic.
I just think that warp drives probably take up a lot of engineering space and computer space which could be used for other systems. Yes, there might be a special class of ships with redundant warp cores, but I don't think most ships would ever need them.

Atoz thanks for your input. I have thought about this, but aside for the extra systems being installed or Incorporated into a new ship design. The additions wouldn't be as extensive for a warp1,2,3 core in a primary hull as a the components for a warp 9 plus drive section...and as for warp escape pods..I have not thought about it.....its a bit extreme but, could be used for a larger escape pod on a star base.

This Sounds Rather Feasible, Indeed!

Thanks for everyones input on this issue.....I still think that in many situations having a small axillary warp core in the primary hull of a federation starship would improve things alot!!

that is a good idea but what about ships like norway, steamrunner and akira class
