In star trek voyager it says that ocompans only live nine years. Even Kes says that but I dont get it! Wouldnt the ocompans home word have a different length year meaning that it could be 50 of human years that the average ocompan lives? Also with the universal translaters it abviously translates words of different languages to the language the user speaks but wouldnt the persons lps who your talking to(if they sepak a different language)move not to the words that your hearing in your language? Am I making any sense! Attachments:

Dax. I never recall them saying an Ocompen year was different than an Earth year. It most likely is! I had assumed that the years were converted into Earth years, but I should be careful not to assume. I have wondered many things about the universal translator to. I'm not sure how to answer your question??

I didn't mean to confuse you more Dax. You could go to some Star Trek sites and find the answers you are looking for. I'm not sure exactly what you are asking??

Well, after reading up on it, it seems they live 9 earth years. It's not directly said anywhere it's 9 earth years, but it seems very likely that is what is meant. Either that or the Ocampa year is similar to the Earth year. Read it yourself if you want to form your own opinion: memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Ocampa#PhysiologyAbout the lips moving with the words, I agree, they shouldn't if they wanted to be as real as possible. But hey, it's tv, so they just thought it would look better.

Hey Ive got a idea maybe the universal translater translates ocompan years to human years so it could be 10 ocompan years that shes saying but it translatd it to the equivelent in human years(9years). Just a guess!

Wow - great thoughts.
I'm not sure what the UT would have to do with it, but really the important thing is that any planet not exactly with the same rotation around a sun as the Earth will have different "years." For example, if one were to live on Jupiter, 1 year is over 400 days as opposed to Earth's 365 days.
Thus, depending on Ocompa's relationship/distance from their sun, their "year" will be substantially different than Earth's (unless they have the exact same rotation as does Earth).

I know I'm a little late with the replies, but here's how I take it: a year is a year (which is simply revolutions of a planet around its sun). Scientists are generally in agreement that for humanoid life to survive on a planet, it would have to be situated somewhat near where the Earth is around our own sun. And obviously no terraforming had ever been performed on the Ocampan homeworld. Which means that an Ocampan year probably wouldn't be much longer or shorter than our own is. Probably anywhere from a matter of days to a matter of months-difference between the years. So at most, an Ocampan living on the Ocampan homeworld might only live a few months to a year longer than a nine year span on Earth.
