Five or six years ago, I wrote an original novel called "Cadet Cruise". (I even sent it to a couple of paperback publishers and got nothing back at all.) So I've decided, just for the fun of it, to rewrite it as a Star Trek novel, set in the time period of "Enterprise".
The thing is, I need a quick crash course in the history of that period. What year did the Vulcans make contact? Does Starfleet get its authority from the United Nations, or is there another governmental body? How many colonies does Earth have? How many different classes of starships are there? Crew compliments? That sort of thing? Can anyone help out?

The Sci-fi channel has just started over from "Broken Bow", and I've been watching to try and pick up the answers to a few of these questions, but no luck so far. They hint but they don't say!
I have noticed, however, that T'pol just stands there like a bump on a log. She apparenlty has no curiousity about anything, no social skills, no personality at all. Data had more personality than her! But then I suppose it takes a very good actress to portray a Vulcan without seeming like a robot.

Here's a nit-picky question, if you like that sort of thing. Last week, there was a scene where T'pol said into the intercom, "Captain Archer, please report to the bridge." I've never thought about this before, but if you want to get technical, a Captain is the highest authority on board a ship. He "reports to" nobody (in the military sense); they all report to him. She should have said, "Captain Archer, you are needed on the bridge," or something of that nature.

well i can't help you on any of that stuff, i'd really just suggest looking on memory alpha ( memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star_Trek_Enterprise#Summary) , or something. That has a summary and links to every episode summary...very long summaries. might as well save time just watching the episodes, lol. but on another note, about archer being reported...yeah, that is funny, i bet they didn't realize what the writers wrote when they said that and thought it sounded fine, or else i think they would've changed it. i mean, you're here correcting star trek writers...now why isn't your story published? lol...really though, how long is it? it sounds interesting...

There are one or two changes I would have to make to have it conform to Star Trek (the cadet ship I have them on doesn't have artificial gravity, for example; the crew sections are big drums that spin). If I ever get it finished, I may think about posting it here, one chapter at a time.

Here's a little tidbit for future reference: according to the episode "Carbon Creek", "every schoolkid knows" that first contact with the Vulcans was made on April 5, 2063.

Excellent, only 56 years away. I'm afraid I won't be of much help in terms of Star Trek history, but why rewrite the novel as a Star Trek book? Will you try to get that one published as well? If you need backup to convince the publishers, I'm with you.

Excellent, only 56 years away. But we still have to live through the Eugenics Wars. I'm definitely NOT looking forward to that!

I wish I would have opened this topic earlier. I distinctly remember the Enterprise-E arriving at Earth on April 4, 2063 in First Contact. Of course that was the day before first contact.

Subspace comms network is a very interesting star trek forum. I don't post much on this forum ,but I do like reading through most of it. They are much more strict on what they consider to be spamming..........If you go there and post something....be carefull...They reprimanded me once for restating something in my own words.
