Okay speaking of emotions, do you think that even without his emotion chip that he somehow felt some emotions? It seems in a few episodes it looked as if he might of felt a thing or two...either that or he "acted" out the emotion convincingly.

Shakespeare said, "Assume a virtue if you have it not," because practising something enough develops into a habit. I would argue that Dr. Soong designed Data to mimic human behavior, hoping that eventually he would start to feel those emotions. I think that Data got better and better as time went on, and from time to time, he probably did "feel" them.

I think the whole thing about Data is that he didn't get it that his "witness exploration" was just a platform for his own personality. He had a personality, of sorts, though a technologically driven one. His reactions and curiosities were analogous to Aspergers Syndrome. Or to that of someone who'd spent their whole life in a hole and then suddenly was expected to live with and interact with others according to their rules and social customs and so on. One thing that kinda ticked me off about "The Measure of a Man" was that Data was as good as stolen property in the first place, before he was reactivated by Star Fleet. What right did Star Fleet have to "decide" whether he was sentient or not? I did think it raised some really excellent questions and made good points and so on. It was definitely a warning to humanity against trying to harvest embryos for genetic manipulation (kinda a Gattaca sort of a thing), and against letting machines take our jobs from us (there was a TOS episode about Daystrom's perfect computer as well), but really, I feel like those issues could have been dealt with in other ways than making Star Fleet look that arrogant/corrupt. I think I must not have paid much attention to spot. I kinda saw him as a returning "guest appearer"

Rosy, I don't understand what you mean by calling the Federation "arrogant" or "corrupt". Please explain more fully what you mean. Are you saying they shouldn't have declared Data sentient or that they didn't have the authority?
Every culture has laws, and at some point it has to decide to whom these laws apply. To take one example, children under 16 years old are considered "minors" under the guardianship of their parents, and thus do not fully enjoy the rights of adults. Data couldn't be considered "stolen property" in any sense of the word, since Dr. Soong (his "owner" if you want to put it that way) was nowhere to be found. It was assumed he had perished with the colonists on Omicron Theta. The very fact that Data was allowed to enroll in Starfleet Academy means that at that time his sentience was taken for granted. It was probably inevitable that someday, someone would require a formal court ruling on the fact, which Capt. Louvois provided. I'm surprised it took 26 years.
As for Spot, if you're not a cat lover, I suppose it's easy to miss him (or her, as the case may be). He didn't first appear until season four ("Data's Day").

One thing I noticed the other night watching Clues is the strange shape of Data's quarters. Those big semi circle things on either side of the room. Why do you suppose that is?

I noticed that, too. It's almost as if his quarters was on a cylindrical pylon or something. He doesn't have portholes, either.

That could be by choice, I can imagine Data being a bit of a workaholic (so is Picard!). Also, he doesn't need to sleep so it may be that he chooses to work extra on off shifts.

I wonder what it would be like not to need sleep? That would be strange.

It would be. I've heard of a rare medical condition that causes people to not require sleep (or just an hour a night). What would you do with all that extra time?

I think affection was something Data had to learn. I remmeber one of the first times we saw Spot and she kept trying to climb on his console. Data just kept removing her and he didn't seem to understand what Spot wanted.

Last night I saw "In Theory", the episode in which security officer Jenna D'Sora broke up with her boyfriend and then seemed to be attracted to Data. He saw this as a good opportunity to explore human interpersonal relationships.
It also gave us the great line: "Lieutenant D'Sora just gave me what I consider a very passionate kiss in the torpedo bay."
