I think Data is one of the most interesting characters in the whole Star Trek verse. Each series seems to have at least one person who stands out and tries to be more human, Data is the best one of these I think. In Voyager, the Doctor has the same role, only he seems to have a little easier time fitting in, since he's made to be like a human, and can change his program rather easily. B'elanna and Spock are half-humans who try to fit in, and Seven has to struggle to become human again after being Borg. I think there's something sad and touching about Data's struggle that makes it more interesting though. Note, I've only seen him in the movies, not on the show. I will watch TNG one day

In TOS, Spock ws the token alien, the Outsider who can stand back and make comments about human culture. It worked so well, each series has its own Outsider. I think youre right that the EMH filled that role in VOY.

Actually I think there were several after TOS, sometimes commenting on different parts of human culture such as emotions or cultural norms - in TOS there was just Spock but in TNG there was Data and Worf as an alien albeit one raised by humans, in VOY there was The Doctor but also Neelix and Kes and Seven and in a way Tuvok, in DS9 we have Kira and Garak. What do you think?

I think just being an alien doesn't really make you the Outsider that Luke is talking about. In TNG, Worf pretty much kept to himself and rarely did that sort of thing. I didn't watch VOY much, but in DS9, the Outsider was Odo, because as a changeling, he was an alien to everybody.

Last night I saw "In Theory", the episode in which security officer Jenna D'Sora broke up with her boyfriend and then seemed to be attracted to Data. He saw this as a good opportunity to explore human interpersonal relationships. It also gave us the great line: "Lieutenant D'Sora just gave me what I consider a very passionate kiss in the torpedo bay." Somebody pointed out to me once that in this ep Data used contractions. It was during their argument in D'soras quarters when she called him childish. But really there's a pretty obvious explanation for it...
