It's summer again, and time for stargazing. Where I live, most of May has been rainy, but I'm looking forward to clear skies again.
Isn't that Mars working his way through the constellation Leo?

I'm doing good jjust to recognize Leo, sir. Is that the one with the head like a backwards question mark?

Lucky for me where I live it can be clear any time of the year for stargazing! I was disappointed that the last 2 astronomical events it was overcast! I will wait for the next one. I did get some nice views of the winter constellations last winter...Orian, Taurus, Canis Major...and the planet Mars!

I'm doing good just to recognize Leo, sir. Is that the one with the head like a backwards question mark? Yes, it is. This time of year, face West and look for three stars making an acute right triangle. The acute angle points to your left. To the right, you'll see that "backwards question mark", which is the head of the lion, facing to the right. Down by his front feet you'll see a red star that isn't actually part of the constellation. If you look again the next night, it will have moved. That's Mars (I think).

One of my favorite constellations this time of year is Scorpio, because it's so instantly recognizable! I don't even have to describe it. Just look for a giant scorpion climbing out of the south-southeastern horizon!

OK I found Scorpio. Theres lots of trees on my south horizon so I didn't see all of it. But I get the idea.

That is one of the problems with Scorpio. It stays pretty close to the southern horizon. Did you find Leo?

I heard something on the news last night about auroras being sighted in the northern United States the next couple of nights. Anybody seen one?

I don't see anything either. What you should do is check in at Sky and Telescope every week or so. They'll probably post more as it approaches. When is that again? www.skyandtelescope.com/

Thanks a lot, Admiral. That looks like a good site. I'll keep an eye on it. Comet Elenin is supposed to be visible towards the end of Sept.

It doesn't look as if Elenin is going to be visible after all. Too bad. Be sure and read the comments at the bottom of the page. I'm sure you'll get a kick out of them! www.skyandtelescope.com/observing/home/128708798.htmlIf you're browsing on the Sky & Telescope site, elsewhere it mentions a Comet Garadd, which is supposed to be around from now until February. But don't get your hopes up. It's magnitude 7 which means you'd need a telescope to see it.
