In the season five episode "Disaster", the Enterprise was struck by a Quantum Filament which disrupted power and communications, and caused emergency bulkheads to drop, sealing off large sections of the ship. Through a series of events, Troi found herself the highest ranking officer who happened to be on the bridge at the time, so she was in effect in command.
How do you think she did?
Or, if you don't have an opinion about this specific topic, do you have any comment about Troi in general?

At first she was uncertain, but with Chief O'Brien's support she became more confident and did well! Ro had some good ideas that turned out to be wrong, but she did get power to the engineering counsel to find out what was going on! Later on...a few years, Troi became a full Commander, so she learned a great deal from this experience and others!

I didnt like the idea that a support officer could give command orders but she did pretty well. Technically she was the ranking officer.

Troi was Lt Commander by rank and Ro was an Ensign. The Lt Jr grade Command officer was killed. I know that a Command officer outranks another officer that is not in the Command division that is the same rank in Command situations. I'm not sure exactly how this works in every situation if the Command officer is a lower rank than the Science or Operations officer. I think it depends on the situation and if an officer is placed in command by a higher ranking officer.

The "Command" section is probably groomed from the beginning in how to command a ship. Remember how Wesley served on the helm, then he served in Engineering for a while. The purpose being to get a good overview of how the ship as a whole functions. Support officers like Troi wouldn't have that knowledge (and it shows in some of the questions she asked).

She was another charcter I didnt likemuch at first. But as time went on I could see how useful it was to have someone empathic. I got like her. But I still dont think she'd make a good command officer. I think that test they gave her was too easy.

It was a holodeck test in the first place so she would no the ship wasnt really in any danger. Plus (I don't want to give it away) but she had to sacrifice the life of a crewman. She would have known that wasnt real too.

I see what you're saying. But the test was probably set up mainly to test her knowledge of the ship's systems and her judgment about what the correct procedure would be.

And she also got to take it over and over until she got it right. That doesnt seem fair.
Anyway which is your favorite Deanna Troi episode? I'm thinking Haven, where she almost got married to that other Betazed guy.

Betazed? Wyatt was Human. But that's a diversion...
I don't know. I liked that episode too but I don't know whether it'd be my favourite of hers. I'm not sure which one is really.

I think I'd go with "Night Horrors", when everyone was hallucinating because they couldn't go into REM sleep. And she was the only one who could contact the aliens who were trapped with them in the Tykkan's rift.

Betazed? Wyatt was Human. But that's a diversion... I havent seen it in a while but youre probably right. I remember him in that Betazoid style outfit and thats why I was thinking he was Betazoid. Plus the mental link he had with that blonde.

The thing with Troi is that she used her empathic abilities to help other people so much, but we really didn't see HER except in glimpses every now and then. Like in "Cost of Living" when she's worried about Lwaxana making the wrong decision.

From what I've seen (it's not a lot though, so feel free to put me straight), there aren't many woman in top positions on the TNG crew, is there? It's like Deanna's being put there just because they need a pretty-face. This is a reason I like the Voyager crew a lot more initially, because Janeway, Kes, Seven and B'elanna are doing great jobs having different personalities. More women to the Starfleet! It gets boring with too much testosterone.
