I wish to make the wonderful posters here aware that we have in our current capabilities the means to make the vision of Gene Roddenberry real. To that end, I partnered with an inventor and together we wrote a book showing how we could usher in a golden age of Star Trek reality. The book is not a Star Trek novel, but offers solutions to vitually all the blocks towards such a world. If you want more information, please visit my thread, which explains additional information and links to a free ebook version: www.abovetopsecret.com/forum/thread575911/pg1Thank all who choose to investigate!

I'm not entirely sure which "vision" you're talking about, but I gather you mean some method of extracting enough free energy that people wouldn't have to work anymore. Is that a fair guess about what you mean?

Interesting link and article! I'm not understanding very much the connection between the content of the article and making Star Trek a reality! It would be nice if people would behave themselves well like they do in Star Trek....Live by a good ethical code, but most people don't! They behave like the humans in the MU in the "Terran Empire!!!!!!!

Scarcity doesn't make people bad. Back during the Great Depression people managed to get along pretty well.

I'm not sure than technology is the key to "ushering in a new golden age". If it were so, we would already have one. As we can see from the oil platform disaster, technology is mis-used at least as often as it is used well. The problem is the greed of the people who use the technology.
I'm pretty sure that Roddenberry realized this as well as anyone. It is the attitudes of people we have to change. Several times on Star Trek, we have seen people with minimal technology nevertheless enjoying a happy, utopian culture. The first one off the top of my head is the Baku from the movie "Insurrection".
