Has Star Trek, in light of the new director J.J Abrams become increasingly commercialised or has it stayed true to the original cult following?

I think I am certain of what you are asking, but I would like you to clarify the meaning of your question, before I attempt to answer it.

Series and films of Star Trek has always had fan interaction. Do you think the latest film represents a return to traditional America and Star Treks notions of exploration and Utopia?

I do not know what you mean by "traditional America" but in regard to "exploration and utopia" I, sadly, did not detect the same elements and sense "humanitarian" accomplishment that one would find in one of the earlier Star Trek programs. While I enjoyed the new film, I did not find it to have the same academic merit that the various television series' had.
Why are these your only two posts? You should introduce yourself.

I think I agree with KAiza. I thought the humanism of the series was absent. It was too much shooting and blowing things up.

Pecisely. Part of the fun from the previous Star Trek programs was that it covered very sensitive issues. Not to mention the subtlety, of all of the various points made by the variety of characters, when they would provide their own insights into the issue at hand. The new film had none of that.

That's why I think the movies in general fall short of what Star Trek is, at least to me. As far as Abrams' movie goes, it was nothing like the Star Trek that I love. I think he was only chosen to direct because he was trendy.

He isn't a bad director but I think that you are right. People know his name and will see any film that he directs on that basis.

But isn't that just what Star Trek needed to get new fans who will discover the TV serieses? I must admit I had little clue who JJ Abrams was because I'm no film buff and it was my brother, a Trek fan himself, who took me along but I can imagine a fair number of people had the wrong image of Star Trek, went to see it because it had an "in" director and fell in love with the franchise.

Do not get me wrong, while I may have made the above comments about the superficiality of the new film, I fully recognise that it had the fortuitous benefit of making people aware of Star Trek: The Original Series and all of the other Star Trek programs which followed. Not to mention that that awareness, may also transform into a greater appreciation for the original franchise, and a complete abandonment of the new film that made them aware of the franchise in the first place.

Hell, I ain't abandoning the film. It's still awesome in my opinion. XD
I'm starting to see more and more how different it is from the source material though in more than storyline.

Hell, I ain't abandoning the film. It's still awesome in my opinion. XD I was not suggesting that you should, or would do this. I was merely speaking of fans that might discover the series through the new film and end up liking the original content much more, and that this was one benefit of the new film.
I still liked the new film.H+

Yes, that's all true. We had a big influx of new members here just after the movie premiered. Several of them said they had never thought much of Star Trek, but now they wanted to know which series they should watch next!
