Okay, I recently started watching Star Trek the original series. So I apologize for my ignorance. But I'll start off by asking how far into the future is the original series set? Also, is the "star date" the same thing as the year they are in? Or does it indicate a period of time like ADE or BCE?

The original series (TOS for short) is set in the 23rd century. That is about as close as they ever come to an exact date. (unofficially, you can takeit that the year is 2266 thru 2269 if you want) The Stardate is definitely not the year, because as you may notice, the first season starts in the 1300s and goes to, if I remember, the 3000s. The Stardate is actually standardized among the various races that make up the Federation. Think about it. It might be 2266 on Earth, but it might be 5666 the way the Vulcans reckon time. It had to be standardized!

TOS went from 1312.2 to 5943.7. Since it was supposdd to be a five year mission its kind of reasonable to guess the first digit represents the year, the next three represnet the date and the decimals the hour. Sound about right? TNG took place about a hundred years later near as I can figure.

That's probably a reasonable guess, yes. I remember in "The Corbomite Manuever" after the Enterprise had been stopped by the space buoy, in the next scene Kirk's log entry states that 18 hours had passed and the Stardate had gone up by about 1.8.
Of course if you pay attention, the stardates don't come in order from one episode to the next. That's partly explained by the fact that epis are not necessarily shown in the order they were made. And partly by the fact that time is not an invariant. It is relative. So if you're on one of the spiral arms closer to the core of the galaxy, the stardate might be different than if you were on the rimward spiral arm. That only makes sense.

I never thought of it that way but I suppose youre right. THe stardate might depend upon where in the galaxy you are and how fast you're going. Wasn't there a TNG epi where TAsha Yar appears after she was killed?

Yes, I believe so. She died in "Skin of Evil", but appeared in another episode with a later stardate. I can't remember the details offhand.

I was watching "Generations" last night. You know how it starts with Kirk's socalled "last mission" on the Enterprise B and then "78 years later" it joined the NextGen crew.
