Yes that was the one Evolution where wesleys science project got out of hand and th nanobots evolved into intelligent beings. that was kind of stupid wasn't it?

I wouldn't quite go so far as to say "stupid", but it did stretch credulity a good bit yes. You have to suppose that medical nanobots were already in common use, and their behavior would already be strictly understood. They would have to work together to get their jobs done it seems. And if they reproduced (as in constructing more copies of themselves from the organic matter found inside the patient's body) they would also have to have a line of code telling them when to stop. I have to say the writer of this episode got carried away with what he thought was a good idea and didn't think it through.
I like Dr. Stubbs, though.

Yeah but if nanobots did reproduce, evolution would really take off woudn't it? They would evolve that fast. STubbs was kind of full of himself, but I suppose if you're a genius you have the right to be.

We could probably start a whole topic just about evolution. But simply put, natural selection depends upon differential survival. There must be some means of variations appearing in the organism's genetic code (either mutation or by sexual co-mingling of genes), AND there must be something in the environment that kills them (predators or food shortages, for example) so that survival depends upon these variations. As far as i could tell, these nanobots simply copied themselves perfectly, there were no predators at all, and all they had to do was eat. Under these conditions, there is no pressure for natural selection to work on.

Oh yeah. Youre talking survial of the fittest. There is that. the nanobots didn't have any form of predation at all on the Enterprise. In fact there would have been nothing to kill them off. They would have just kept on making more and more copies, none of them dying. Its hard to imagine evolution taking place at all.

"Survival of the fittest" isn't really accurate, but there is a certain amount of competition in nature. Predators compete against prey. Even members of the same species compete for scarse resources. The individual who reproduces most efficiently leaves more descendents. Simple logic would tell you that those descendents would eventually dominate the gene pool. The trouble with these nanobots was that there was no competition.

ENsigns of Command. That was the one Data was sent on a mission by himself, to organize an evacuation of a colony. ONly the colony doens't want to leave. I liked the girl who took a shine to DAta because he was the first android she had ever seen.

Oh yes, and the Sheliak! They were fascinating, weren't they? They reminded me of Yarnek in "The Savage Curtain". As far as I remember, this was the first time Data was sent on a mission all by himself.
