Captain Picard (the character) seems to be really old. I say that because in the TNG episode The First Duty, he tells Boothby that he was a graduate of class of 2327. That is odd because it was already established that he was 21 years old when he graduated from the academy and he became a captain a couple of years later. So that means he would have been 58 or 59 years old in 2364 which is the first year of the TNG series. 2337 is also one year before Captain Janeway was born. Also that mean that in 2370 the last year of TNG Picard would have been a captain for over 40 years. Yikes! Talk about a career at a standstill.

What makes you think he became a captain just "a couple of years" after leaving the academy? That wouldn't make sense. Officers leave the academy as Ensigns or Lt. j.g.s (if they graduated with honors, which Picard probably did). Then you have to spend years moving up the ranks from lieutenant to lieutenant commander to commander. (This is precisely why I thought Abrams' movie was so stupid.) Data, for example, was a lieutenant commander for over 20 years!
To command a ship like the Enterprise, they would have picked someone with experience. I don't know exactly how old, but in the first season, he appeared to be in his late 40s to me.

Well he became captain of the USS Stargazer in 2333 so six years after the leaving the academy he was a captain. That is actually pretty quick to become a captain. His time on the Stargzer was well established in the TNG series. 37 years is still a long time to be a captain. (Look at TNG episodes, Relics, Tapestry and The Battle.) Well he would have been captain for more than 37 years because in the Star Trek Nemesis he was still a captain and that happened during the year 2379. We know that year is accurate because Voyager had already made it back to the Delta Quadrant and Janeway was an admiral.

Six years doesn't sound right either. That would put him at what 27? I think somebody just got the dates wrong. In Conspiracy there was a woman captain named Twyla Scott and Picard said she had made captina faster than anybody "present company included" meaning himself.

OK wait. It's possible Picard was a Lieutenant Commander when he commanded the Stargazer. As you know, not all ships in the fleet require a full Captain. Although he would have been addressed as "captain" because he was in command. Here is the official entry on Jean-Luc Picard from Memory Alpha, which confirms what Katie is saying. en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Jean-Luc_Picard

That makes sense. from the name Stargazer you get the idea its a survey vessel or soemthing. Maybe class four or class five.

Captain Picard (the character) seems to be really old. Taking a fresh look at this topic, I come back to this statement. Early in the series he appeared quite young. But did you notice around season six or seven, he began to look really old and tired? There were some episodes in which he didn't do much of anything. I remember almost wishing (along about "Chain of Command") that he would retire and let Riker take over. Then in the movies, we almost have a completely different Picard, an action hero!

Agree with you there. Some of them Journeys End in particular he started to look like an old man. But in Insurrection he's climbing ladders and fighting with Ruafo!

Didn't he become captain of the Stargazer when the previous commanding officer, (and a lot of others) were killed?

I don't really recall any mention of how he became captain. I know there was that battle with Ferengi, but that was when he had already been captain. It's possible they mentioned it but I just don't remember.
