I wonder if anybody on this board has read the books or seen the movies. What do you think of them? And do they remind you of the original series episodes: Bread and Circuses, The Gamers of Triskelion, Arena, Plato's Stepchildren?

I'm afraid I haven't read these. I did see the first movie (when it came on the Family Channel), but I didn't catch the similarity. Now that you mention it, it is something like "Bread and Circuses". I liked the part where they had previous winners helping to train the contestants.

It's about a post apocalyptic future Earth where the wealthy and the powerful ruling classes force the teenage children (ages 12 to 18) of the poor working classes to fight to the death on live TV. It's like a sick combination of Roman gladiator games and a reality show like Survivor. And it's punishment for the poor working class rebelling in the past and losing. When a girl and a boy from the poorest district make it to the final 2 alive, they refuse to kill each other and threaten double suicide by poison berries rather than fight each other. This is the spark that lights the fire of the next rebellion.
It's similar to the first 3 episodes I mentioned because in those the Enterprise crew was forced to fight by someone more powerful than them. In Bread and Circuses and the Gamesters of Triskelion it was for some kind of entertainment of the abductors. In Arena Kirk had to fight a Gorn, I think it's because a non corporeal life form wanted to know which one was worthy.

The final 2 movies, Mockingjay Part 1&2 are out on DVD now. These 3 movies are sequels to the first one and detail how the act of defiance by refusing to kill each other sets off a rebellion to overthrow the corrupt government. The girl Katniss comes to be seen as something of like a figurehead/symbol of the rebellion. Almost like a futuristic Joan of Arc.
