I never understood why the Borg would assimilate a few colonies in the Neutral Zone and then disappear for a while only to suddenly show up again. I prefer the thought that it was the Crystalline Entity.

This is an interesting idea however, the Borg took everything and assimilated it leaving nothing. The crystalline entity only took living matter and left everything inorganic.

That's true, Andrew. Kijuro has a good point, too. How did the Borg suddenly appear at the Neutral Zone, long before we met them (in "Q Who", I think)? Maybe it was something entirely different.

It is an interesting point because both the Federation and the Romulans had outposts missing!! If it was the Borg, which looks likely, why did they wait so long to attack and try to assimilate everyone?

Maybe they got eaten by the crystalline entity!

If it was the Borg who had done the attacks and then had been devoured by the crystalline entity, the Borg's cybernetic components would have been left behind and most likely found over the course of time.

Federation and Romulan outposts and colonies had been removed....scooped up with nothing left along the neutral zone.

DS9 was a spin off of Star Trek the next generation in the 4th or 5th season.....I'm not sure which.
