I probably should have started a comment thread a long time ago, but I didn't think of it until now. I'm not just fishing for complements, either. If you liked a particular story or a particular joke, I want to hear about it, BUT if you didn't like a particular joke or story, because it was too stupid or too racy or because it offended you in some way, I want to hear about that too. Or if you have a suggestion for a joke I didn't use or a story I haven't done yet, that would be good.

I just read Arachne's Curse. I liked the Andorian cheif engineer best. Is she based on any particalar Star Trek character we know? "Even I cant change the laws of physics, but I'll see what I can do."
She and Fawkes seem to have an interesting realtionship. I take it he's Black, or African/American? I never thought about it before, but techniclly she's correct that we all have mellanin, so the only difference between us is how much. So if any of us is a "pinkskin", all of us are!

I appreciate that, Luke. To answer your questions,
1) It may surprise you, but when I was writing Vespis' dialogue, I was thinking mostly of Garak -- that wry, ironic attitude of his that says he doesn't take anything particularly seriously. Plus a dose of the playfullness of Vala Mal Doren from Stargate.
2) Charles Fawkes is actually English, although he does have some African ancestry. I based him on a character I saw on Dr. Who. I'm glad I got you to think about something you'd never thought of before. In my opinion that's the definition of Science Fiction. BTW, I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have on what Vespis should call him instead of "pinkskin". I thought of "tanskin" or "chocoskin", but they don't sound right.

How about "darkskin"? I know it sounds lame, but its the best I can think of.

"Darkskin"? Not bad. I'll use it in my next story.

Nobody's commented in a while, so I thought I'd say something about how my stories have improved. The interesting thing to me is how characters develop over time. I started "Arachne's Curse" with just three central characters -- Atoz, Diane Weir, and Lt. Rosh. Luke asked to be my helmsman, and gave me a couple of story ideas in exchange. I wanted an Andorian, and she became the Chief Engineer. Otherwise I just created characters as needed, giving them pretty much the first name that popped into my head.

Other than by looking at the number of hits, it's hard for me to tell whether anyone likes these stories or not. But if you do, I have a few more posted at Starbase 242 ( ncc0242.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=fanficts ). There are a couple of TOS parodies, a couple of USS Odysseus stories, but the one I am most proud of is "The Way to Dusty Death", which is a retelling of the season three TOS episode "All Our Yesterdays" from the point of view of Mr. Atoz. This is NOT a parody, I hasten to say, but a serious attempt to explain away some of the apparent inconsistancies in that episode. If you haven't seen "All OUr Yesterdays" in a while, you should probably watch it again first.
