Hi All! I've posted a few times here so I guess its a good time for an introduction. My love of Star Trek started when I was very little and would curl up on my Daddy's lap to watch TNG every week. It was a great father-daughter bonding time for us. We still share a love of most things Sci-Fi and you'll frequently find us watching Stargate when I go visit the parents... Now I share my love of Star Trek with my fiance, who is even more of a Trekkie than I am. He owns all the movies and all of TNG and DS9 is next on our list of "Series to buy". (what is the plural of series anyway?). My favorite series is TNG. My favorite character fluctuates between Picard and Data (although I maintain that TNG is really a great example of ensemble work and I love the whole cast). I love episodes that are more about character development and/or mystery and less about a bad guy. I have a tendency to defend things that many people consider "bad" (examples include the Enterprise series, the movie Nemesis, and Data's death), and I love a good, well reasoned debate. I prefer the term "Trekkie" over "Trekker" (::shudders: and my favorite department is science. My love of Star Trek has drawn me into a Star Trek RPG (UFOP: Starbase 118 Star Trek RPG) where I play a Haliian counselor. (Haliians are touch empaths. The only on-screen example we've seen [to my knowledge] is Aquiel Uhnari from the TNG episode Aquiel). Lately, I've been writing short stories featuring Haliians. In real life, I'm a medical student, planning (at this point) to specialize in pediatric hematology and oncology (blood and cancer diseases in little kids). What else should I say?

I have that same failing, doctor (although I'm one of those who don't care much for "Enterprise"). A lot of people shy away from disagreements, unfortunately. Ditto and ditto. You said you have a fiance? (Rats!) Why did you chose the name "drpiano"? Any special reason?

I have that same failing, doctor (although I'm one of those who don't care much for "Enterprise"). A lot of people shy away from disagreements, unfortunately. Aye, it is unfortunate. I love a good debate and sometimes I'll pick the unpopular side just so I can argue ;-) Ditto and ditto. You said you have a fiance? (Rats!) Yes, I do. We're getting married in less than 8 months (eep!). He's awesome and amazing. You'll just have to find a trekkie girl somewhere else... (hehe) Why did you chose the name "drpiano"? Any special reason? Because I love doctors and one day, after finishing all my tests and doing my rotations, I'm going to be a piano! wait.... strike that and reverse it... I've been playing piano for years (took 12 years of formal lessons, now I just play for fun), so I love pianos, and one day, after finishing all my tests and doing my rotations, I'm going to be a doctor! (hopefully a pediatric hematologist/oncologist... helping little kids who have blood diseases or cancer... or cancer of the blood sometimes). Thanks for asking!

Are you guys going to have a Star Trek wedding? There was a couple here a few months back planning one, and they were asking for suggestions. I'll try to find that thread and bump it back to the top for you. [It's in the Mess Hall -- but bear in mind the thread was originally posted back in December.]
Here's another thing I've been thinking about since you mentioned being a Haliian. Is being a touch telepath more of an advantage or a drawback for a doctor? What's your experience?

I'll try to find that thread and bump it back to the top for you. [It's in the Mess Hall -- but bear in mind the thread was originally posted back in December.] We're having a Celtic-themed wedding but I think we've decided that when we celebrate 25 years or something like that we'll do a Star Trek themed vow-renewal service. Here's another thing I've been thinking about since you mentioned being a Haliian. Is being a touch telepath more of an advantage or a drawback for a doctor? What's your experience?[/quote] She's a counselor, so there isn't as much of a need to touch people as there would be with a doctor (I'm DrPiano because I'm on the road to being a doctor in real life). I can imagine that being a touch-empathic or touch-telepathic doctor would be much more difficult. She has a tendency to avoid touching people most of the time because of the touch-empathy. It's always a really big deal for her to decide to touch someone. She a) feels like its an invasion of their privacy and b) is sometimes afraid of the influx of foreign emotions. However, some of my favorite moments that she's had have been when she decided to take that step. I'd say that it's certainly awesome in terms of character development and has been one of those quirks that have made her enjoyable to play. To everyone else: thanks for the welcome

Okay I got your character confused with you (always a hazard on a forum like this). I was thinking that it would be convenient for a doctor to literally be able to feel what the patient is feeling. On the other hand, that could be a distraction too. Imagine you had someone like Barclay, afraid that he's got something serious. I imagine his fear would get in the way of you making an accurate diagnosis.
Anyway, I can't think of anything else to ask right off hand. I hope you're making yourself at home on the forums.
