Hello!
I've a question about the episode "The Raven": is the flying bird shown in the beginning really a reaven? For me it looks more like a bird of prey and, according to the mistake they made by inserting the scream of an eagle, they maybe also used another bird rather than a raven for this scene.
Does anybody know?

Good question. Unfortunately I'm not much of a Voyager fan, and haven't seen the epsiode you mention. Sorry. I'm sure someone will answer, though.

It looked like a raven to me. But the sound was definitely an eagle.

Hi, I've asked in another forum and they also say it's a raven (with a wrong scream ). But there's another mistake in the episode: when Janeway reads Seven's PADD she says Seven describes the bird as a one with yellow eyes- and ravens don't have yellow eyes, their eyes are black. But...maybe ravens not from Earth have yellow eyes...

I have just recorded "The Raven" of of Spike. The bird was a raven....named after 7 of 9's parents ship. The Raven. they were assimilated at around the time it crashed in the delta quadrant.

Yes I Know in the story itself it was a raven because of Seven's dreams (because of the parent's ship) but I wondered if the bird they used for the scene really was one, because they inserted the eagle's scream and I've never seen a raven flying, but many birds of prey and to me it looked like it maybe could have been one. But now I know better

Birds of prey( like eagles and hawks) and ravens/crows fly similar in some ways and different in others. It all depends on the situation and its difficult to explain. A lot of their habits are different. In the "Raven" episode at the end when seven and Tuvok were in the wreak of the Raven...the ship, there was a beacon left on, which triggered Seven's Borg organelles to reactivate. It also caused Seven's visions of the raven flying at her, causing her terror.

This is a good question, Trekki7. Motion pictures will often put audio on the soundtrack which doesn't match the image. The idea is to give you a "subliminal" impression, an emotional appeal. One example is snakes. Whenever you see snakes in a movie, it's almost a sure bet you will hear rattles on the soundtrack, even though the snakes may be constrictors or cobras. Why? Because the sound of a rattlesnake says "danger". It's the same with that bird of prey shriek.

I agree that in films/TV they often use one animal for a scene and use a sound from another animal for effect.....I don't like this very well!! ,but I understand why they do this sometimes.

Well, the're not just the sounds; it's the same with a car in an accident: whenever you see this in a movie, the car explodes a moment later. In reality it never does. Ummm...maybe ravens in space use eagle's screams, who knows?? ;-) Ravens on Earth could do if they want, because they can copy sounds like parrots....But I'm drifting away, sorry

trekki7. Good point....I know what you mean about things in movies being unrealistic....good for effect, but still bothers me! I like things to be as realistic as possible!! ....drifting away...don't worry about it....I do the same thing sometimes.

Actually, it's all related to the topic -- how motion picture directors think they can "improve" on nature. My favorite example (or pet peeve, if you prefer) is the standard scene, most often in westerns, where a group of people is sitting around a blazing campfire. Eventually, during a lull in the conversation, one of them will look up and sigh, "Gosh, look at all those stars!". And there is a quick cut to a perfect black sky liberally sprinkled with delicate stars, even the Milky Way. Being an avid star-gazer myself, I always think, "Bull****!" Any bright light source is going to make the irises of your eyes clamp down. You might see a dozen or so of the brightest stars, but to see the Milky Way, you're going to have to back off away from that bonfire, idjit!
