There have been other Q threads, but I felt like starting a new one. I pose a simple question for everyone...do you feel like Q is a good guy or a bad guy? I can see the argument for both, so I wanted to see what your opinions are.

It is clear to me that Q was both good and evil. He was more evil eariler on and became more good later. There are many examples of this. I just recorded an episode with Q. It was the one where captain Picards artificial heart is damaged in an ambush. Picard regrets the fight he was in when his real heart was stabbed and his arrogance, undisciplined youth. Q takes him back to avert the fight and to change who he was in his youth. Q then takes him to the present and Picard doesn't like the man who he became. I could go on and on about this ,but the main point is that Q taught picard something about himself. That is some of the things we are not proud of in our youth can with maturity make a good out come.

I think neither, he's just immature (from what I've seen and I've only seen him in about two eps so my judgement could be a little off.) Anyway, immaturity is dangerous in itself and he also reminds me of Trelane in the Squire of Gothos although we know that Q isn't a child.

I don't remember where the comparison with Q and Trelane was made, but it was made somewhere. Trelane didn't have as much power as Q and relied on the device behind the mirror that Kirk and his landing party destroyed. This took away trelanes powers. I'm not sure, but he could have been an immature Q

I remember a voyager episode that shows the Q continuum. Obviously the most boring place in the universe. Nothing left to say, nothing left to be (scarecrow ) I believe Q knows excactly what is good or moral but he probably expects to find joy in doing bad things. However, in the end of TNG he expresses how much he wants the human race to evolve. I'd say Q is enlightened and some of the things he does maybe considered as bad by people who are not.

Pending On How You view It, I Guess Q Is Both. He Loves To Torment Others With His Powers, And Yet Shows Remarkable Kindness Too. Though Personally I Wouldnt Trust Him With My Leopardess Back Turned! EVER! IRL I More Than Out Do Q Powers Wise By A Factore Of 13,572 To The 30,000.176Th Power. And Such, But I dont Use Them For Meer Entertainment As To Tormenting Others. I Use Mine To Help Others And Make Things fun!

...he also reminds me of Trelane in the Squire of Gothos although we know that Q isn't a child. That's interesting because if you look back at "Encounter at Farpoint", it's pretty clear that he was originally intended to be like Trelane. Remember the first time he appeared, he was dressed like Sir Francis Drake, and he had to adjust his appearance. I don't see him as immature, or as good or as evil. He is just completely alien, so the way he looks at things like morality is entirely different from ours. And that is what makes him dangerous, at least from our perspective.

I don't remember where the comparison with Q and Trelane was made, but it was made somewhere. We discussed it in my "Exobiology 101" thread in the Original Series, starting about post # 64.

As Shakespear said - nothing is good or evil only thinking makes it so. What's good for the CEO of a company is downright evil for the people he has fired. If employees had more rights and could not be fired on a whim, then it would be good for them but it would bad for the CEO and so on. Two countries at war against eachother, the soldiers are doing what is good for their country. One has to assume that the other country is evil to justify fighting it.

What about Lord Acton's observation that absolute power tends to corrupt absolutely? Do you think that when someone has the power of Q, he/she can't resist using it? And that temptation would eventually make him/her evil?
I'm thinking of the movie "Hollow Man" (with Kevin Bacon). It was essentially a retelling of H.G. Wells' "The Invisible Man". Once he realized that, being invisible, he could get away with pretty much anything, he began to do as he pleased, without worrying about he consequences.
