Oh, the Genii! I really disliked those guys! It got so bad that, as soon as I saw that they were going to be involved with an episode, I changed the channel!

I still watched the episodes with the Genii. I thought their guns looked a bit odd and clunky. Their uniforms looked ridiculous!

What I didn't like was that they would come up with these ridiculously elaborate plots to trick the Atlanteans into doing something Really Stupid, and they would fall for it, every time!

They always got out of their crisis at the last minute, like SG1 did in the last minute of the episode .

Getting back to the topic of "Stargate SG-1", there was an episode on last week "The Other Side", with Rene Auberjoinois as the the leader of an advanced civilization that was under siege by enemies. They had fusion reactors, force fields, remote controlled fighters with thought-activated controls, and a drug which seemed to heal wounds instantly -- and they were willing to trade all this for a few tons of heavy water. There was just one teensy little catch...

I'm watching some of the Star Gate Sg1 marathon on today on syfy. They did make a reference to Star Trek in one episode about sci-fi shows to cover up the Star Gate program. It was kind of funny!

I'm bumping this back to the top because some people have recently discovered Stargate. As I mentioned in my introductory remarks, although it is based on the movie with Kurt Russell and James Spader, it was developed for television so that it has some interesting differences. I have also been told that there is a series of books based on the movie and as such is quite different from the television series.

What are the main differences for when I get to see the TV series? I've only ever seen the film mentioned above.

This is difficult to answer, since I haven't seen the movie in a long time. Okay, in the series the stargate doesn't just go from Earth to Abydos; it is part of a network of hundreds of stargates all over the galaxy. The Goa'uld (Ra) are a parasitic race which dominates the galaxy by assimilating technology from the races it conquers. The series mainly follows the SG-1 team -- O'neill, Jackson, astrophysicist Samantha Carter, and renegade Jaffa Teal'c -- as they explore, looking for allies to fight the Goa'uld.
The main difference is probably the different styles of the actors who play O'neill and Jackson. O'neill is played by Richard Dean Anderson ("Macgyver") in the series. Jackson is played by Michael Shanks. I have to say that it's an improvement. Jackson was easily my least favorite character in the movie; I thought he was an idiot. But with Shanks, he was my favorite character.

And then they met the Asgard, an alien race from another galaxy who was trying to protect humans from the Goauld.

Yes, but I was just giving a quick introduction. The series accumulating a huge cast of background players, which is one of things that kept it fresh and entertaining for ten years!

And as Luke and I said, it accumulated a number of interesting background characters over its ten-year run. Bra'tac, Thor, Selmak/Jacob, Narim, Martouf... And some Star Trek actors had guest appearances, including Armin Shimmerman, Marina Sirtis, and Rene Auberjonois. About season eight, it faltered a little bit in my opinion, right about the time Richard Dean Anderson apparently decided he was getting too old for running around like an action hero. But for the last two seasons they brought in Ben Browder and Claudia Black from the old "Farscape" series.
