I watched and recorded the first Star Trek pilot episode "The Cage" yesterday. It was a digitally remastered version. It was good except for a couple of scenes were cut from it. It had Spock and Sulu in it, but the other characters were different. Majel Roddenberry was in it, but played the first officer, not Nurse Chapel. Much of this original pilot was put into a 2 part TOS episode called "The Menagerie" Spock is put on trial for taking his former captain of the Enterprise Captain Christopher Pike back to a planet called Talos 4. The Talosians were masters of illusion! More later!!!!

I've seen "The Menagerie" many times of course, but I don't think I've ever seen "The Cage", that it was based on. I remember Spock being in the original footage, but I don't remember Sulu.
Oh yes, Majel Barrett as "Number One"! She was terrific! But apparently the focus groups they showed it too didn't like the idea of a woman as second in command.

I don't think Sulu was there either. I'll have to check. EDIT: Yeah he is not in it. Spock is the only one from TOS that was in the original pilot.

Mr Data. Sulu was in the version of "The Cage" I just saw. He wore a blue uniform and I only saw him briefly a couple of times. There may be other versions of "The Cage", where the scenes with Sulu were cut out.
Atoz. Right you are about The fact that they did not like a female first officer. I heard or read something about this before.

Like how there was no Nurse Chapel in The Cage, but Majel played Number One.

Mr Data. To be honest ,I'm not sure if George Takei was playing Sulu or another character. He was in a couple scenes briefly early in the episode in a blue uniform.

Hmm... I'll have to watch that episode again I guess...
EDIT: I'm watching Where No Man Has Gone Before right now, and Sulu is in blue... I haven't gotten around to watching The Cage yet.

Mr Data. Let me know if you see him. Remember that some scenes may be cut depending on which version or network is showing them, you may or may not see him. The version with Sulu in it was missing a couple of other scenes. One of which was at the end when number one played by Majel Barret Roddenberry and a female crew member were the only ones transported leaving the male crew members on the transporter pad. It was when they were trying to rescue Captain Pike.

I gathered that a few scenes were cut from "The Cage" because they weren't needed in "The Menagerie". I was watching it again this morning, and I noticed something. In the scene where Pike and the away team first beam down, for just a second the Transporter Chief's assistant is wearing horn-rimmed glasses!

Atoz. You have a good eye for detail. I didn't notice the glasses. I do notice a lot though, but can't notice everything. Some times scenes are cut by the networks to make room for those mostly stupid commercials!

"The Making of Star Trek" includes Roddenberry's original story outline for "The Cage", and it mentions several other aliens being kept by the Talosians near Pike. I've always wondered if they filmed these and they got cut out of the footage in making "The Menagerie".

Atoz. I have wondered about the other aliens to, and if there are deleted scenes of them as well. They were most likely from nearby The Talos system, but some of them could have been travelers from far away, tricked by the Tallosians and then captured by them. The Talosian's power of illusion did have a range of light years as demonstrated in the 2 part episode "Menagerie".

Atoz. You have a good eye for detail. Actually no. I must have seen this episode dozens of times, but yesterday was the first time I noticed the glasses!

I have an eye for detail, but this doesn't mean that I notice everything the first time, especially if I'm paying close attention to something else. I have this episode recored and I'm going to look for the scene with the crew man with the rimmed glasses!
