Varel. By all means please watch these episodes and post your thoughts on them!! Make some of your own new threads on topics!
One thing about the Talosians that has always fascinated me is how long did it take them to develop their mental powers of illusion? they are never mentioned in the 24th century as far as I know of.

Since they were a dying race in the 23rd century, I'd say they probably succumbed to time.

The Talosians found that their mental powers were a trap and needed other species to survive. They could not even repair machines built by their ancestors. At the end, they said to Captain Pike that humanity was their last hope.

Hmmm, I would have to agree that they probably died off...unless the old Pike and the girl somehow were able to change that...but then again, they were probably to old to reproduce.
I wonder if the during Caption Picard's time and if the Talosians were still alive, if their planet was still a forbidden place.

I just got the Season Three Remastered DVDs, and the remastered version of "The Cage" is included, along with the original black and white version (with introduction and commentary by Roddenberry himself). One thing I was right about -- they do show a couple of the aliens in cages adjacent to Pike's.
I would think they probably are extinct in Picard's time, and that General Order Five is no longer active, but it's just a guess.

Atoz. You have a good point about the possible extinction of the Talosians in Picard's time. It would depend on the life-span of the Talosians and exactly how desperate their situation was.

I was watching "The Cage" the other day and the Magistrate did say they had a much longer life span than ours. He seemed to think he would live long enough to see an entire colony.
The thing is, if Starfleet decided to send an expedition to check on them, how would you set it up, to make sure whatever ship you sent wasn't taken over? Any ideas?

Send in the Betazoids and Seven of Nine. Maybe work with the Ferengi.

I've wondered about the fate of the Talosians, too, as I'm sure many have. It's unfortunate we didn't see them again, though to keep with the exclusivity of that star system, it makes sense.

It's possible Betazoids would be even more easily fooled, since they have an empathic nature to begin with. It would probably be best to send a robot probe first. But the Talosians apparently had a very long range. Could you ever be sure they weren't sending a telepathic signal along your telemetry link?

The Talosians could maybe except volunteers from different races to help them. Captain Pike after he was severely disabled and bound to that wheel-chair wanted to stay with the Talosians in the TOS episode " The Menagerie". Reg Barclay from the Enterprise-D with his holo-addiction would have love this sort of situation since it would be even more real than being on the holo-deck!
