The inhabitants of the planet Sarpeidon have limited time travel capability but no space travel, and so they escape the supernova which threatens their civilization by moving into their past. Even though there are several apparent inconsistancies in the plot, this is one of my favorite episodes, proving that technical contradictions do not necessarily ruin a good story.

Atoz. Is this the episode where Spock and McCoy travel back to an ice age and meet a lady there who is all alone?

I've never seen this one, and the plot doesn't sound familiar. That's funny because when I was twelve I got so depressed that I read the entire first Star Trek Encyclopedia cover to cover in three days.

Atoz. Is this the episode where Spock and McCoy travel back to an ice age and meet a lady there who is all alone? Yes. It's the next to the last episode of the Original Series. Gosh, if nobody's seen it, that's pretty much the end of this conversation! I think I'll go sulk...

Atoz. The people of this planet looked human. The One man left who was sending people back into their past to escape the coming catastrophe had to prepare people for the trip. What do you think about this? what exactly was he doing?

It was said that the Atavachron "prepared" the cell structure and brain pattern to make life in the past "natural". The Prosecutor, for example, seemed to genuinely believe in the existence of witches. I find this a difficult concept to swallow, just as I find it hard to believe that Spock suddenly was unable to think logically because he was 5,000 years before his home planet "discovered" logic. There have been other stories where people travelled into the past ("The City on the Edge of Forever" and "Assignment Earth", for example), and they never ran into any problem with having brain patterns that didn't "match" the time period they were in. If there was such a problem, why doesn't it automatically "prepare" you as you step through the portal? And if it's intended to be a one-way trip, why does the portal open both ways?

I have often wondered why Spock reverted back to the way of his ancestors to. I can come up with some ideas as to why , but could never figure out why! I'm wondering about all the people going back and changing their history....that is unless it was meant to be!

They wouldn't have been changing their history, any more than the Prosecutor did. I think the Atavachron was originally intended for historical research, and that was really the reason for "preparing" people -- it included a post-hypnotic suggest NOT to do anything to change the future.
In fact, I once wrote a story about this ("The Way to Dusty Death") which resolved these problems and included an alternate ending.

Atoz. I saw you have posted some more fan fiction, but didn't notice if this story was among them. I will read them when I'm more awake and have more time. You have a real talent for explaining things in a story!

Ex Astris rates this as one of the worst TOS episodes. I don't know where you got that idea. It looks to me like he gives it a rating of 6 out of 10 (and describes it as a "gem"). But this sort of thing is subjective anyway. I notice he gives "The Omega Glory" a rating of 0, and it happens to be my favorite.
