Alright so...I've got a few questions about new Trek fans. I don't really have a huge problem with people that are new to Trek but treat it with respect, but the new fans who do the slash pairings, and support the SpockXUhura, etc. annoy me. Well, mainly the people who watched Trek after watching the movie just because it is now an "it thing" to watch Trek. I am a new fan, however I did not start watching the series because of the movie. A friend sat me down to watch a few episodes of TOS right around the time that the movie came out. So my questions...Should all new fans be lumped into the same category? What does "Trekkie" mean exactly? Like...when does someone gain the ability to truely call themselves a trekkie? Also, what do you think about the new movie fans and that the movie brought in -so many- new fans?

Bifa There are a wide set of interests and activities various fans engage in. Some dress up and go to conventions...I don't do this. Some like some movies or series better than others. Some like to draw Star Trek art or write Star Trek stories..aka fan fiction. Some of us like to play Star Trek Roll playing games or RPGs. I like doing this! You are in the right place to find out and other members here will give you more information or information about Star Trek fans from their own perspectives. You can also do a web search for Star Trek sites. Some of the links are posted on a few of the threads here....don't recall which ones at the moment.

No, we don't lump all "new fans" into the same category. People are attracted to Star Trek for many different reasons. We have to treat each one as an individual.

If Trekkie isn't meant to be derogatory, then I would say anyone who enjoys Star Trek can be called one, no matter how much (or little) they've seen. But if I understand Atoz correctly, I agree with him in that new fans shouldn't be lumped together. They just haven't had a chance to experience the joys of Star Trek yet.

Nope, a Trekkie is someone that would rather watch an episode of their favourite star trek show, than that new comedy show, and can name one fact about star trek normal people don't know. That is what I think of as a Trekkie.
But yes, we are very different, I for one engage in many things about Star Trek, but my favourite subject is Klingons. And others have a thing for Vulcans, or whatever is good.

This is a good thread. I think each person has a different perspective on who they consider to be a Trekkie. So Mac, would you say there is a good chance that a lot of people who post here aren't, by your definition, Trekkies?

Well, I have to admit to reading quite a few brilliant fanfictions involving some of those things you mentioned hating - and I wouldn't say they don't treat it with respect just because they happen to ship a slash pairing or Spock/Uhura or whatever. Like andrewlee said there are many different ways of being a fan.
Me? Outside actually watching the programme I read fanfiction - mainly DS9 and nuTrek for some reason - and look at fanart, absorb myself in Memory Alpha and small debates like you find on here.
I didn't realise that it was the "it thing" to watch Trek now, I just spotted it was on and went "ooh!" and watched it and became a fan all over again - I used to watch it (TNG/VOY) as a little girl. I've never seen an episode of TOS to me though I've seen clips, maybe if I got to watch a few whole episodes I'd warm to it more because it just looks quite strange, the colours are all odd and its...almost old-fashioned.
One thing I'd like to know is what is supposed to be the difference between a "trekkie" and a "trekker"? I've heard both phrases used.

a lot of people have different opinions on the difference between a trekkie and a trekker. My opinion is that a trekkie, like myself, enjoys the show a lot, goes on forums like these, and collects star trek memmorabilia such as models, posters, action figures. A trekker in my opinion is a hardcore trek fan, who is always wearing their uniform, going go every convention possible, changing their house to look like a star trek bridge But Gene Roddenberry himself said that the correct term is trekkie but he hasn't denied trekker in any sense. 'A lot of people get insulted by being called a "trekkie" because under their understanding its being another of the big group of fans. Calling someone a trekker doesnt alienate anyone, but gives a star trek fan the individuality they want.' - quote taken from another website. - as for your question bifa, no one has to earn the right to be a trekkie. If you love star trek as much as anyone else, then thats reason enough to give yourself the title

Loving Trek is subjective and hence cannot be measured or tested. For me, a Trekkie is someone whose eyes light up at the mere mention of Trek.

I, as a person, consider someone a trekkie if they would rather watch star trek than anything else on tv

I consider myself a "trekkie". I love to read the books, watch the show, and play the games...and I've been to a Star Trek convention too! So, I consider a trekkie one who loves Star Trek enough to spend their time and money on it and also a person who tries to get others to realize the wonders of this awesome show!!

In my opinion Trekker ad Trekkie are losing some of there original meaning making anyone a Trekkie or a Trekker. I don't consider myself as either. Love the shows and have since I was little when TOS came out but just the same I am an on off fan for the most part why I don't consider myself as either. I don't think really anything defines someone who is new or anyone who's been a fan a long time. Not at the present day an age. This is my opinion and I don't expect anyone too agree with it or not too agree with it.

Why so bothered about Spock and Uhura? Sure, shippers need to perish from the Earth, but why hate something new? I look forward to seeing what they would do with this romance and how it could affect future stories. But I'm not getting wrapped up about it or treating it as a religion. I still agree it was weird seeing this unfold on screen for the first time.
