Easy, Atoz. You probably didn't mean to sound snappish, but *wince*... Just by their earlier statements, I can tell they take Star Trek very seriously. Thank you for pointing this out. If you thought it was snappish then Edify probably thought it was, too. This may explain why we haven't seen him since. But as far as him not taking Star Trek seriously, that was his own argument! He said transporters and warp drive were "impossible". How else am I supposed to interpret that? It seemed to me he was arguing, "Science fiction is all nonsense anyway, so we shouldn't care if something doesn't make sense." For my part, rather than snappish, I was trying to be polite. What I meant was, "I can see that you don't take it as seriously as I do. I'll take that into account the next time we get into an argument."

We can't say that transporter tech and warp drive are impossible just because we haven't invented it yet. There's a quote from DS9 that fits that pretty well - "Maybe it was arrogant to think that. But it's even more arrogant to think there isn't a cure just because you couldn't find it."

Exactly. I am quite certain that a few hundred years ago, the very idea of flight was preposterous. Now we do it to reach destinations which we could easily drive to. It is a service that that we wouldn't even dream of doing without.
Perhaps teleportation will one day be viewed in this manner.

I see what you were going for now Atoz, but my initial response was probably the same as Edify's. At least it's as cleared up as we can get it. ^___^
My dad likes to point out that at the time that Star Trek TOS first came out, ALL of that technology was pretty far fetched and "impossible" but now we all carry communicators with us and computers fit in the palm of your hand and the like. And it's all even easier to use than the journeys on Enterprise made it look. I can't want to beam places! Teleportation would be AWESOME! Hope it happens in my lifetime hehehe

Well, according to Trek canon the first warp flight will be in 53 years you'd be 79 and I'd be 75. Assuming of course we live to old age and survive the minor obstacle of the Third World War. ;P

[I don't want you to get the wrong idea, so I'm stepping out of persona for a second to say it doesn't matter if you think warp drive is "really" possible or not. The point I'm making is that you can't seriously enjoy and talk about a fictional world, whether it's Star Trek or Harry Potter, unless you first accept the world as real.
If you watch Star Trek and you're constantly thinking, "Well, these are just actors on a plywood stage, the special effects are fake, blah, blah..." then to me you're wasting your time. There are other forums where they talk about it in just that way. They have topics where they hunt up nit-picky "continuity errors" as if they think that makes them clever. I try to discourage that sort of thing here, because I don't see the point.
But of course I'm only a moderator. I have no more say over the offical policy of this forum than any other member.]

Not continuity errors, points of topic to work into canon. Like Worf's non-sealing suit vs Reed's sealing suit some hundred years before. Maybe Worf's broke? I like doing that. It's fun.

I contribute and edit articles on the Deus Ex Wiki and I too often find that, as an example, someone might have contributed an article about a firearm used in the game, and they might talk about how effective it is, but they do not discuss the article as if it is history, such as saying "...this model was first put into use in the field in the year 2071" and et cetera.H+

Yes, if the intent of the topic is to come up with imaginative explanations for the anomaly, I think that would be a fun topic. I enjoy that kind of thing myself. We had a topic years ago where we discussed things like why starships are streamlined even though there's no atmosphere in space. I'm talking about people who just sem to like finding "mistakes" and don't care about having them explained. Of course, a few of these are amusing and harmless (e.g. in "The Menagarie" there is a scene where very briefly the transporter techician is wearing horn-rimmed glasses. The next time you see him, he isn't. It goes by so quickly, you usually have to have it pointed out to you.). But clips of Picard mistakenly wearing three pips instead of four? Or Data seeming to accidentally use a contraction? What's the sense in that?

Well, you could say that Picard may have a dodgy pip that keeps falling off and Data's contraction programming was not entirely written out?

As to the destroying of the franchise, consider Doctor Who. Those poor people had to wait for 16 years for a proper continuation of the story, with a single film seven years after cancellation to tide them over until 2005. I prefer to have new material produced than to have to wait like that.

But Doctor Who is different. It seems like every head writer has a slightly different take on what the Doctor is about. Every time he regenerates he literally becomes a different person, with only his memories to provide any sort of continuity. And of course lately they've been saying due to some kind of "cracks" in time or some such bulldada, even time can be rewritten, so even that continuity is dodgy.

True, but I simply meant that I'd rather have something than nothing.

Personally I hated the film. It did not have the Star Trek feel. It was more like watching a sequel to Galaxy Quest or something. Nothing on that ship looked old. I also did not care all that much for the acting either.
They could have done something from a Voyager angle or something. They have enough books! We have a lot of Kirk movies!
To me personally this movie was a very huge let down. To be honest I fell asleep twice during the movie when watching it at the theater with my dad. That is how uninteresting I found it.
I found this funny on how it should have ended. Thought it might lighten the mood of this thread.

Very cute! You're certainly right that this topic could use a little mood alteration.
