Ok I was curious about the above. I remember the episode mostly, but the ending is a little blurry. I'm currently looking into a way to re-watch it. My question is this, the Photonic's(holograms), they gained their own residence on the planet Ha'Dara. Now, was anything ever said about them again? Because I remember what Iden had in mind. And would very much love to see them actually fleshed out like all the other races, with things such as their own music,language, drugs, etc. I'm willing to collaberate with a group of people to acheive this goal. If anybody would like to flesh them out let me know please. =}

Not being a big VOY fan, I'm not sure what you mean here. I do vaguely remember that VOY had a pretty loose idea about what constituted a "life form". Don't take this the wrong way, but I thought the idea of holograms being considered living things was silly.

Yeah, well the way they went about it with The Doctor was kinda but i liked the point. Voyager wasnt my favorite series either. I liked the idea and it made sense to me. I was curius if anything was ever done more to expand this idea.

Never seen DS9 but I've seen TNG VOY and the original ST. I was thinking of looking there.

No luck there, there were only 4 stories that were related to flesh and blood. And those were more after the episode,and those were with more after the episode then a continuation. I just want to take this episode and expand upon the Photonics have a culture of their own.

That sounds like an interesting project. Of course to make it a story, you have to have conflict, generally a danger of some kind. What could be dangerous to a colony of photonics?

It could be a virus, but I don't believe it would work unless the virus is a photonic. Maybe the Borg? Whatever it would be, it would have to take place in a time where the culture has been established, to be able to describe things. I also see them pirating some in order to have material s to build things such as more Photon Generators.

This is what I don't understand about this. These beings are basically just computer programs right? So there has to be a central computer somewhere which stores the programs. That's just a normal computer, so any virus which attacks computer programs would work fine. The thing is where would the virus come from? Say they've been established somewhere on a planet. Who would just come in an upload a virus? For what reason.
I was thinking something more like a natural disaster, like a solar flare from the nearby sun which might partially disrupt the computer.

Welll, their A.I., but a virus is something that destroys... I dont see them really having a criminal system like humans. So maybe a virus is a rouge program or something like that. I like the idea of something natrual. But if it has to come from somwhere, Then the Hirogen would make sense, or the Borg. And they picked the planet Ha'Dara. So i would invision the planet as a planet wide holodeck...which could be divided into sections/realms. Since they are prgrams, they could have layers of realities. But for it to be a fellow Photonic, then it would be more sabotage then a virus...

I wouldn't picture the Borg caring about non-organic lifeforms. They want to assimilate, remember. How would you assimilate photonics? A planet-wide holodeck? How would that work? Who maintains the emitters when they break down? And why would a fellow Photonic want to sabotage them? Wouldn't that be like Dr. Evil trying to destroy the whole world? Please don't think that I'm just coming up with objections just to be objecting. I'm really trying to help you focus on the details of how this society would function. It does sound like an interesting idea.

Well the doctor could use physical objects, his emitter is a good example. So I'm sure they would have engineers. Photonics are nothing but code. Uless they are allowed free-will, they do not posess it. If Janeway did not allow the Doctor his free-will, he would still be just a simple hologram preforming what was required of him. So maybe its a virus/Photonic made by another race. It would be prgramed to steal what information it could and destroy what it could.then it would return to it's race's computers, and reveal what it had stole. The virus and the Photonics would have one thing in common: they are programs at their base. The Borg may find somthing useful with their culture... Maybe the prospect to creat photonic borgs? Borgs that would assimilate entire computers? They do seem to love their information...lol So I guess they would upload a group of say... five? Borgs consciousness into the Photonics systems and then go from their...idk, these ARE just ideas... and I don't think that. I like feedback, It helps this thing grow. I just wish their was more intrested. Oh yeah, I've read some around the forum, I seen that you have intrest in the holodeck and stuff...

In order to have a viable culture, you've got to think of what photonics would want, what they would work towards. Obviously they don't need to eat, they just run on whatever powers the emitters. They wouldn't be hurt in the ordinary sense, they probably wouldn't feel pain unless they were programmed to. But what WOULD they feel? What would they strive for? Have you found the Fan Fiction section yet?

I like the roge program idea. Howabout if the computers they use have oldholodck programs stored on them andone of the characters accidently gets activated? Hes not a real photonic cause he doenst have free willl. Hes just following a script. He thinks hes say Jaws in the James Bond movies and he's going around killing people (photonics i mean) at random. The hero of the story might be a constable or something. Up until now he thought his job was pointless but now hes got to stop a killer!

Good to see you again, Luke! That's a pretty good idea. The character would basically be the photonic equivalent of an android, is that what you're saying?
