I have been watching a lot of Star Gate SG1 and Star Gate Atlantis lately. How many other Star Trek fans are also Star Gate fans? I would like to know since some Trek fans are also fans of other sci-fi shows like Dr Who and Battle Star Galactica.

I think that "Stargate SG-1" is second only to Star Trek as the best science fiction series ever. Last week I saw another of my favorites, where a wormhole glitch sent them back to the year 1969. Being interrogated by Air Force Intelligence officers, Jack O'Neill gave his name as "James T. Kirk" (remember the similar situation in "Tomorrow is Yesterday"?).

I saw and liked that episode. It was funny when Col. O'Neil said he was James T Kirk!!! ;D

There was a short article about "Stargate: Universe" in USA Today yesterday. Apparently the premise is that the stargate somehow strands a team on board an alien starship somewhere, and they don't know where. The ship is also full of aliens, not all of which will be "latex-faced, English-speaking" aliens. Hmmm. Sounds as if someone has been watching reruns of "Farscape".

Atoz I'm going to watch Star Gate Universe when it comes out. I'm looking forward to it. I have seen clips about it and have read some about it on line. I hope it will be a good series that will last at least a few seasons. I have also been watching Star Gate Atlantis which is good, but not quite as good as SG1.

I have noticed that the ships in the Stargate series are much faster than the ones in Star Trek!
Star Gate Universe is to premiere in October sometime. I hope it's a good series!!

For me, the appeal of "Stargate" has been lost ever since they moved towards making it one of the run-of-the-mill science fiction series with starships, etc. The USAF aspect, and I'd argue, more "realism" with SG-1 was brilliant, and unfortunately seemed to go away at about the same time as RDA's leaving the show.
What was fun about Stargate was how different it was. Now, they travel in starships and even...yes..."beam" people up and down.....hmm, like Star Trek.

I have noticed the same thing, but I still like Star Gate. I like how in Star Gate Atlantis a person with a gene from the Ancients can active advanced technology with thought!

Don't get me wrong - evolution in a series is a must or it will certainly die as a franchise. However, the key is *unique* evolution.
As for stargate, developing a much closer relationship with the ancients throughout the years is a good example of unique evolution of a series - something that is specifically theirs, advancing through storylines, etc.
But, when they start "beaming" people up, having spaceships organized similarly to Star Trek, and make the show much more convenient in terms of basing plotlines on the foundation that Star Trek has already made, then there's a problem.

There could be a couple reasons for this copying of Star Trek themes. They could have been running out of new ideas or thought that having space ships and beaming technology would be the natural progression of the knowledge they had gained over the years. I'm not sure which it is or it could be both.

Sometimes the Star Trek references get a little ridiculous, like when you catch Carter saying, "Belay that order." Sorry -- "Belay that" is a NAVY expression. There is no way an Air Force officer would be caught dead saying it. I know because I was in the Air Force. She would have said, "cancel that order" or "countermand that order".

Yes, that's true.
I think Stargate began to go downhill after about the eighth season, when Daniel Jackson ascended for the second time! The Ori storyline could have been good, but it was pretty clear even their own writers weren't taking the show seriously any more. That's why I don't expect much from Stargate Universe. I suspect that Syfy has brought over the writers from Battlestar Galactica, which I hated.

Going "Downhill" happens to many series because they run out of ideas and start to deviate from their original plans. They do all they can do that is good and then start to die.
About Star Gate Universe. I hope it will be a good one, but I know the chances are also good it won't be and will not last long. I hope they have good writers!!

I have seen a number of people from Star Trek on the 2 Star gate series. I saw Conner Trinner (Trip Tucker) on an episode of Atlantis as a captured Wraith turned temporarily into a human by Dr Beckett using a retro virus. I say Colm Meany as the leader of The Genii several times. The last time he was blown up by a nuke!
